E.E. Cummings, both painter and poet, called those two pursuits his “twin obsessions.” Understanding the importance of visual impact and presentation, his unique style often scattered words and fragments of words across the page to punctuate emotion and meaning.

This view, possibly of Mount Chocorua in New Hampshire, was probably exhibited at the Memorial Art Gallery in 1945. It was from the collection Dr. and Mrs. James Sibley Watson, who were patrons of both e.e.cummings and the Memorial Art Gallery.
About his own work, e.e.cummings wrote in 1940:
apparently I've found my style in painting
--it's NOT
painstakingly washed flat surfaces sans brushstrokes
fine camel's hair delineation-by-outline
building up a careful sum out of parts
it's chunking ahead with a big brush held loosely & loaded with paint.
Out of the crisscrossings, "mistakes",etc a picture Builds itself --chiefly INWARD,thru GREYS.
