While much of Arthur B. Davies's work is ethereal and far-removed from the gritty realism that characterized the work of many of The Eight, he was an innovative artist who was dedicated to fighting the conservative practices of the National Academy of Design. Davies also spearheaded the 1913 Armory Show, which became a byword for all that was contemporary in American and European art.

This work is typical of his figure paintings, which often include groups of nudes in the landscape.
