Listed in Robert Gilmor's unpublished 1823 manuscript catalogue of his collection: Portrait of an English Nobleman (which was brought to this country by Wertmüller), Hans Holbein, 6 1/4 x 5", Estimated value $130, bought of Flandin in New York 1821. The manuscript is on microfilm at the Archives of American Art, reel 2934 (fr. 1-64).

Painting brought to this country by Adolph-Ulric Wertmüller (1751-1811); his sale, Philadelphia, May 18, 1812, lot 16, (as "French Noblesse"); acquired at that sale by Pierre Flandrin (dealer), New York; acquired from him by Robert Gilmor, Jr. (1774-1848), Baltimore, MD, 1821 (as "painting of an English nobleman" by Hans Holbein); by descent to his nephew Robert Gilmor (1808-1874); his sale, April 13, 1875, acquired at that sale by H. W. Ellicott; F.W. Bennett & Co., Baltimore, MD, no. 18 (listed as Hans Holbein); purchased at that sale by Robert Lebel (dealer), Paris; acquired from him by Caesar R. Diorio (dealer), New York, 1947; purchased from him by the Gallery in 1947
