Francis Seymour Haden was an English surgeon and a well-known etcher who founded the Society of Painter-Etchers in 1880. He studied the original prints of great Old Master artists such as Rembrandt and Albrecht Dürer; his intense studies helped bring about the revival of etching in England.
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was Haden’s brother-in-law, and the two artists collaborated for some time on a series of etchings of the Thames River. The relationship between the artists deteriorated, however, and the project was never completed.
