This leaf from the New Testament of a Bible—the fundamental book of the Christian religion—contains the end of the text from St. Paul’s first letter to Timothy and the beginning of the text from the second. Like books today, the script at the top of the page, which reads “Thimo II,” serves as a chapter heading.
As seen in the second column of script, the books are divided by the elaborately decorated, elongated letter “P,” the center of which contains the image of a man sitting on a stool and writing. This figure represents one of Christ’s apostles, St. Paul, whose compiled letters of advice and encouragement to contemporary Christian followers form a large part of the New Testament.
