As you walk past this sculpture, pay attention to the two white lines printed on its front surface. What happens to these lines as you move? Do they remain still, or do they seem to jump back-and-forth?

The kinetic illusion that you might have experienced is created by the layering of the two white lines onto black or white stripes. When you change viewing positions, the lines alternately appear and disappear, depending on how they line up with the striped background. This creates a flickering effect, and, as a result, the two white lines appear to jump back and forth.
