The self-portrait is undated but may have been made in the late 1920s when Botts was a printmaking fellow at the prestigious Yaddo artist colony. Botts presents himself as a dapper draughtsman with his eyebrows arched over his clear gaze. Stylistic references point to self-portraits by earlier artists including James McNeill Whistler. Rather than describe everything about his appearance Botts relies on loose lines, clear description and select dark lines.
