1950 Presentation Print of the Print Club of Rochester. A posthumous print, published under the supervision of the artist's widow, Isabelle Hollister Tuttle.
Artist
Henry Emerson Tuttle was well-known for his drypoint prints of birds. In the 1930s and 1940s, he was Curator of Prints at Yale University Art Gallery, and the first president of the Artists Association of Nantucket. His work was also included in several books of poetry and prose.
Narrative
In the 1948 Yale University publication "Emerson Tuttle: Fifty Prints," this information about the creation of "Raven on a Stump" is provided:
"This plate was made in Nantucket where no press was available for printing. The demands of the reopening of Davenport College (at Yale University) in the autumn of 1945 precluded the possibility of the printing of the intended edition by the artist." As the work was printed in 1950, four year's after the artist's death, it is considered a posthumous print.
