A yad, which means “hand” in Hebrew, is a pointer used to facilitate the reading of the Torah and to protect its delicate parchment surface. Usually shaped like a long rod with a small hand and pointing index finger at one end, the yad assists the reader to track the Hebrew text, which is written without vowels and punctuation.
