Karl Bodmer accompanied his patron, Prince Maximilian zu Wied, on an expedition up the Missouri River in 1833-34. Maximilian's travelogue, Travels in the Interior of North America, contained a portfolio of 81 prints by Bodmer, whose watercolor paintings recorded the culture of the Northern Plains Indians.

Research indicates that the hair style, facial markings, and jewelry were accurately rendered by Bodmer.

In this engraving, Bodmer depicted two members of the Sac and Fox tribes who were part of a delegation to Saint Louis in 1833 that was pleading for the freedom of an imprisoned chief.
