In the early 1960s, America’s reliance upon the television for entertainment was established, but with the launch of the Telstar I satellite in 1962 the TV also became a primary source for live, breaking news. Halfway through the decade nearly 90% of American households owned at least a black and white set.

TV Still Life may be Tom Wesselmann’s inquiry into what constitutes an appropriate subject for a modern still life. In evidence here is that most compelling quality of Pop art, the potential for conflicting interpretations: is this a celebration of popular culture or a critique?
