This image is from book ten of the Bhagavata Purana which recounts the life of the Hindu god Vishnu. Vishnu, the preserver of the worlds has ten incarnations and book ten deals with the eighth incarnation - Krishna. Brindaban is the place where Krishna spent his childhood with his foster family and is considered a holy Hindu city.

Ray Lewis, San Francisco (dealer); purchased from him by the family of Sibyl Cleveland Beach, around 1963; their gift to the Gallery in 1989
