According to the New Testament Gospel of Matthew, King Herod, ruler of Judea, or ancient Palestine, ordered the infant Christ killed upon hearing of his birth. Warned by an angel in a dream of the danger, Joseph fled into Egypt with Mary and the baby. In this painting, Mary nurses Christ while Joseph tends their donkey in a lush landscape modeled on those local to the artist rather than the desert the Holy Family actually crossed. This scene was a particular favorite of the artist Joachim Patinir, who specialized in depicting semi-imaginary landscapes with meandering rivers and soft, protruding cliffs and rock arches.
