Many of Rochester's distinguished and internationally-known ceramists are represented in the Memorial Art Gallery's permanent collection. Recently, the Gallery acquired this signature piece by Rochester Institute of Technology professor Stephen Merritt. Its perfectly balanced form appears to hover in space, complemented by the blue glaze's emergence from the rich blackness. The artist's work expresses an Eastern aesthetic that was absorbed during years of study in Japan and continued interest in the traditions of Asian ceramics.
[Gallery label text]
Born in Rochester, New York, Stephen Merritt studied in Japan and taught at Rochester Institute of Technology. “My work has sought to capture what my teachers – and, I believe, all great potters – have sought: the elemental nature of clay and the classic beauty it can convey,” explains Merritt.
