This illustration was used for the cover of "American Art Magazine" in 1937.

Gorsline’s prints and paintings frequently invite the viewer to create a narrative. They are moody and suggestive and sometimes threatening in ways that we can’t quite identify.

This drawing was created as a cover for American Artist magazine. Gorsline was an accomplished painter and illustrator, whose best-known publication in recent times is the 1975 version of The Night Before Christmas. In its innocence and joyfulness, it is a very distant cousin of his depictions of New York City in the 1930s.
