Karl Bodmer accompanied his patron, Prince Maximilian zu Wied, on an expedition up the Missouri River in 1833-34. Maximilian's travelogue, Travels in the Interior of North America, contained a portfolio of 81 prints by Bodmer, whose watercolor paintings recorded the culture of the Northern Plains Indians.

The woman and child in this engraving were not physically together at the same. Bodmer saw the Teton Sioux woman at Fort Pierre in what is currently South Dakota. The woman's dress has blue and white beaded trim, and small metal cones that made noise when the woman moved. Atop the dress is a lightweight painted buffalo hide robe, typically worn by women.

The girl lived with the Assiniboins but was originally a Blackfoot. Her dress is made of hide.
