This embroidered panel, called an orphrey, was originally attached to a bishop’s official robes. The panel is one of a pair that illustrates scenes from the life of the Virgin, including the marriage of Mary and Joseph, the Annunciation, Visitation, Adoration of the Magi, Adoration of the Christ Child by Joseph and Mary, and the Flight into Egypt. The embroidered scenes recall Netherlandish paintings of the period; such paintings were probably the original source for these designs.
