The actor Iwai Hanshirô IV, whose career flourished from 1787-1804, is shown here in the role of a young samurai. The actor is identified as Iwai by his mitsudomoe crest, with its pattern of three commas in a circle, on his cloak; another, perhaps his kaemon, or "alternate crest," is on his sleeve.

As in his print of the actor Nakamura Noshio I (97.105), the subtlety of Shunkô's technique is seen in the restrained use of color, the complexity of the pattern in the actor's yellow outer cloak, and in the soft appearance of dappled grey material against the geometric design on the door.
