IX. Eastern State Penitentiary 2010–2012 In 2010, Schaechter began an ambitious site-specific installation of seventeen stained-glass windows at the historic Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. The context of the penitentiary, which functioned as a prison for over a century, inspired the artist to explore collective ideas and feelings about crime, punishment, imprisonment, and repentance. The cathedral-like domed ceilings, proportions, and stone construction of the prison were an ideal setting for Schaechter’s medium of stained glass. The windows were temporarily installed at the prison through 2012. Within the arc of her career, the Eastern State Penitentiary project advanced Schaechter’s mastery of the medium and deepened her inquiry into the spiritual context of historical stained glass.
