Psalm 51:15 [or Vulgate 50:17]: Domine labia mea aperies et os meum adnuntiabit laudem tuam (O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise).
Books of Hours are Christian prayer books that, beginning in the 1200s, were used in the private devotional practices of the laity. They had several components, including a calendar, the four Gospel Lessons, the Hours of the Virgin, the Hours of the Cross and Holy Spirit, special prayers to the Virgin and saints, and the Office of the Dead. Some Books of Hours were special commissions, created by artists attached to royal courts; others were standardized “stock” that were ordered and then personalized for individual patrons.
This leaf is the first page of the Hours of the Cross, which traditionally opens with an illuminated initial letter, an illustration of the Crucifixion, and the accompanying prayer: “Lord, open Thou my lips and my mouth shall show forth Thy Praise.”

This leaf from the New Testament of a Bible—the fundamental book of the Christian religion—contains the end of the text from St. Paul’s first letter to Timothy and the beginning of the text from the second. Like books today, the script at the top of the page, which reads “Thimo II,” serves as a chapter heading.
As seen in the second column of script, the books are divided by the elaborately decorated, elongated letter “P,” the center of which contains the image of a man sitting on a stool and writing. This figure represents one of Christ’s apostles, St. Paul, whose compiled letters of advice and encouragement to contemporary Christian followers form a large part of the New Testament.

This elaborately decorated small triptych was used for private devotion. The center depicts Christ’s Nativity. Together, the hinged wings flank the central image to tell the story of the Annunciation to the Virgin. Mary, with an open book in her lap, is on the right panel, while the winged image of the angel Gabriel is on the left.

Sculpture
This beautiful representation of the Madonna and Child is typical of a type known as the “Virgin of Tenderness,” which developed in France in the early- and mid-1300s. The elegant quality of the Virgin’s dress and her courtly stance suggest her elevated status and nobility, while the Christ Child’s pose and the manner in which his mother supports him evokes an informal, tender mood.
The Virgin’s crown, which alludes to her role as Queen of Heaven, rests on a veil that symbolizes her humility. Although only a small fragment now survives, the Virgin initially held a flower in her right hand, probably a rose or lily, while the Christ Child holds a bird. In Christian tradition, these symbols refer to the story of Christ’s birth and sacrificial death.

This is one side of an intricately carved ivory diptych. The upper register of the piece shows the Crucifixion; the lower depicts the Nativity. Scenes from Christ’s birth and death were often paired as a shorthand reference to key moments in the Christian narrative. Luxury ivories were produced in France in large numbers during the 1300s.

Sculpture
Mary Magdalen was one of the most popular saints in medieval Christianity. As one of Christ’s most devoted followers, she was present at his crucifixion, death, and burial. Known for her faith; she was one of the first to believe that Christ was truly resurrected. The covered box that she holds is a container for the spices or perfume used to anoint Christ’s body after his crucifixion.
Both wood and stone sculptures were customarily painted during the Middle Ages. Gilders and painters, in fact, were sometimes paid more than sculptors for their share of the work. This statue probably stood alone on an interior altar where it served as an object of devotion. Because the sculpture was protected from the elements, it retains enough polychromy to give an idea of the original appearance.

Although acquired by the museum six years apart, these two sculptures [this piece and 49.6] once belonged to the same monumental architectural group on the exterior of a church. They represent an apostle and an angel, both of whom gaze upward. They were probably part of a larger program focusing on the Ascension of Christ, which would have shown the central figure of Christ flanked at either side by witnesses to the sacred event.

Sculpture
This early Gothic console originally supported a vaulting rib in the sacristy of the small French church of St. Martin-de-Candes. The sculpture, which retains much of its original coloring, illustrates the story of Doubting Thomas, an episode described in the New Testament gospel book of John. The apostle Thomas refused to accept that Christ had appeared to his other followers after the Resurrection, saying “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” Christ appeared to them again one week later and told Thomas “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
The sculptor has utilized the architectural form of the console to depict this story. On the left, Thomas, his head now broken, places his finger in Christ’s wound; Mary Magdalen, to whom Christ also appeared after the Resurrection, stands behind him. The apostle on the other side of Christ is Saint Peter, who holds the key to heaven. The remaining figures are apostles who serve as witnesses to the miracle. The figure of Christ originally carried a cross-staff, symbolizing his victory over death.

Sculpture
In the Middle Ages, faithful Christians made pilgrimages to sacred sites in Europe and the Holy Land. One of the most important was to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, dedicated to the Apostle Saint James the Greater. Numerous altars dedicated to Saint James were located in churches along the route, allowing the travelers to pray daily for a successful journey. This statue was originally placed in a niche above such an altar.
Here, Saint James is dressed as a pilgrim, wearing a broad-brimmed, black hat with the image of a scallop shell, a traditional Christian symbol of pilgrimage. He holds the customary staff that supported the pilgrim, giving him strength to overcome the forces of evil and arrive safely at the cathedral. The figure carries a scrip, or alms sack, that is also decorated with the scallop shell. The scrip symbolizes that the pilgrim, trusting in the Lord, carried very little money.
The sculpture retains much of its original coloring; slight traces of gilding can be seen on the edge of the saint’s cloak and the knobs of his staff.

A credence, or cabinet on legs, was used as a serving board in a castle dining hall or as a cupboard for storing vessels in a church. The usual credence had two doors, a paneled back and a shelf below. Like most medieval furniture, this credence is carved with decoration based on Gothic architecture. A quatrefoil motif, a type of ornament that resembles a four-petaled flower and is frequently seen in medieval stained glass windows, covers the doors. A heraldic shield, carved and with traces of polychromy, or paint, is on each door. The coat of arms on the right is a fleur-de-lis, or stylized lily that was the symbol of the French monarchy, and fish quartered; the one on the left shows three fleur-de-lis mounted by a crown, denoting the royal lineage of the credence’s original owner.

Manuscript
The early Christian church continued the ancient Jewish practice of reciting prayers at predetermined hours of the day and night. Called the “Divine Office” or the “Liturgy of the Hours,” it consists of psalms supplemented by hymns and readings. Together with the Office of the Mass, this repetitive daily cycle constitutes the official public prayer life of the Roman Catholic faith.
This decorated page is a leaf from an antiphonary, which is the volume containing the antiphons, or responses, and verses sung at the services of the Divine Office. The page is large and the text clearly written so that the choir could read from a single page. The smaller red text on this leaf, an abbreviation of the Latin words ad matutinum invitatorum, indicates that what follows is the music to begin the Office of Matins, celebrated at either midnight or 2:30 am.

Sculpture
The capitals that crowned the columns of medieval churches were frequently carved with religious or allegorical scenes. At the corner of two of the four sides of this capital, a squatting figure grasps birds by the neck with each hand. In medieval art, the image of a figure struggling with creatures that seem fearsome or malevolent often represents the ongoing struggle between man and beast, or good and evil.
This sculpture was probably originally decorated on all four sides, but at some point in its history was cut down for use as a corner capital.
