Painting
While much of Arthur B. Davies's work is ethereal and far-removed from the gritty realism that characterized the work of many of The Eight, he was an innovative artist who was dedicated to fighting the conservative practices of the National Academy of Design. Davies also spearheaded the 1913 Armory Show, which became a byword for all that was contemporary in American and European art.
This work is typical of his figure paintings, which often include groups of nudes in the landscape.

Arthur B. Davies was the driving force behind the 1913 Armory Show which introduced Americans to radical European abstract art, but his own style remained representational throughout his career. This tapestry of the artist’s signature lyrical nudes dancing in the landscape was one of 36 tapestries he designed and had woven by the famous Gobelins factories in France. Only six were sold during his lifetime; the rest were later destroyed in a fire.
