In 1921, when this print was created, Edward Hopper was a relatively unknown artist who had sold a few paintings but had not begun to receive the acclaim that would be his within a few years. By 1931, when it was exhibited at MAG and acquired with funds donated by a relative of the Watson family, Hopper had become HOPPER; the Museum of Modern Art had purchased one of his paintings the year before. While MAG does not own any of his canvases, we are fortunate to own this print and one other from Hopper’s decade of printmaking, 1915–1924.
The cinematic quality of Hopper’s paintings is evident even in his etchings. A shadowy figure placed at the far end of a line of benches could easily be a character from a Hollywood “film noir.”

2000 - 1000 BCE, ceramics, Greek, kraters
Ceramics
A krater is a large, wide-mouthed jar, often used for mixing wine and water. These two kraters [51.203, 51.204] were found on Cyprus, an important island in the trade routes of the ancient Mediterranean and location of a significant Mycenaean colony. They likely served a funerary function, holding wine at the funeral feast, or containing the cremated remains of the deceased.
The similar scenes on these two kraters represent the popular Mycenaean decorative motif of horse-drawn war chariots. The vase painter represented the two horses as a single body with two heads, two tails, and two pairs of forelegs and hind legs.
The scene may refer to honors for a fallen warrior as described by Homer in the Iliad, where, during the Trojan War, the Greek hero Achilles led a solemn chariot procession in tribute to his dead companion Patroclus.

The celebration of the ancient Egyptian New Year included gifts of these distinctively shaped vessels incised with garlands, geometric designs, and inscriptions invoking the gods to grant the owner life, health, and happiness. Two baboons, sacred to the calendar god Thoth, sit on each side of the papyrus-flower neck of the bottle. The bottles may have contained perfumes or oils used in New Year ceremonies, or perhaps water from a sacred pool.

Camille Pissarro is sometimes called the “father of Impressionism.” The theme of women bathing in country streams during the idyllic season of summer appears repeatedly in Pissarro’s graphic work from 1894 to 1897, when he created twelve lithographs and eight etchings on the subject. All of these intimate scenes take place in the shady bend of a stream and focus on the physical freedom of the nude bathers as they enjoy the open air and light of nature.

With his extensive knowledge of science, anatomy, and the natural world, Albrecht Dürer epitomized the ideals of the Renaissance. He was the greatest artistic genius of his time and essentially changed the conception of printmaking in Germany. Dürer learned the techniques for engraving from his family of goldsmiths, but was later apprenticed to Michael Wolgemut, a well-known Nuremberg painter and maker of woodcuts. He was uniquely placed to learn and work in engraving, woodcut, and painting, although without his brilliance, these opportunities would have been unfulfilled.

Munch's lithograph poster was originally designed for a poster that advertised a 1915 exhibition of Scandanavian art in Copenhagen, Denmark. This idyllic scene, though, is also a political commentary; the title refes to Denmark and Norway, both of which remained neutral during World War I (1914-1918). The two young girls picking apples symbolize those neutral countries along with their citizens who profited financially from that neutrality. Most telling of this work as a political statement is that, despite the seeming cheerfulness of the scene, the girls remain oblivious to the ship shown sinking in the background.
