Painting
According to painter Hans Hofmann, “there are bigger things to be seen in nature than the object.” Ruby Gold demonstrates this idea through the dramatic interplay of color, form, and expression.
Hofmann was one of the most influential teachers of Abstract Expressionism, the painting style for which he is known. While other painters, such as Jackson Pollock, pioneered the style, Hofmann taught it to generations of students and helped to cement its role as a dominant form of painting in the U.S. from the 1950s onward. He created his signature works, like Ruby Gold, in the last eight years of his life, when, at age 78, he stopped teaching and devoted himself exclusively to painting.

Painting
Jackson Pollock mused “that the modern painter cannot express this age, the airplane, the atom bomb, the radio, in the old forms of the Renaissance or of any other past culture. Each age finds its own technique.”
His “poured” paintings, like the one on view here, have become an emblem of twentieth-century abstract art. Eschewing traditional brushes, easels, and realistic subject matter, Pollock placed his canvases on the floor. He often walked on them as he dripped skeins of paint across their surfaces. Using the movement of his entire body, he got inside his paintings, as he sometimes described his working process. His painting style may appear to be accidental and random, but it was, in fact, controlled and defined.

Sculpture
Sculptor Elie Nadelman drew inspiration from the classical forms of ancient Greece, yet his work suggests contemporary influences as well. The streamlined and chiseled facial features of Head of a Woman and the subtle band at the woman’s hairline are timeless elements, yet they suggest an aesthetic closely associated with the Art Deco movement.

Sculpture
Although both casting and forging are ancient metalworking techniques, there was a period during the 1950s and ‘60s when it became quite fashionable to combine them in a single piece. This was the first example of a cast and forged sculpture to enter MAG’s collection. It was given in memory of Giovanni Polizzi, a young sculptor and member of the Arena Group who was killed in an auto accident at the age of 34.

Tetsuro Sawada was born and studied in Japan. Drafted into the Japanese army in 1945 and detained in Siberia after the war, he returned to his art after his release from prison in 1947. He attained international prominence in January 1960, when he had a solo exhibition at the Meltzer Gallery in New York. His one-man show was reviewed by the well-known New York Times art critic John Canaday, who wrote glowingly that the artist was well on his way to “converting the abstract idiom of our decades into a generally comprehensible expression of nature.”
MAG purchased three of his works, including Waterfall, directly from the 1960 Meltzer exhibition.
