Painting
Stuart Davis began as a student of the Urban Realist style, but upon seeing the many European modernist works on display at the New York Armory Show of 1913, the artist found his passion for abstraction. The influence of the broken-up and flattened surfaces of Cubism and the syncopated rhythms of American jazz contributed to Davis’ personal style.
[Gallery label text, 2007]
Gloucester, one of Massachusetts's oldest seaports, was a summer home for painter Stuart Davis from the time he was a young man of twenty-two. This view of the harbor clearly captivated him by the early 1930s, and preliminary studies of this painting reveal how carefully he considered the scene and translated it into paint, all the while deliberately conveying a sense of simplicity and speed in its execution.
After a Parisian stay in the late 1920s, Davis returned to the United States with a new way of seeing things. The goal for him was to paint an expressive, abstracted version of the world around him, rather than a photographic simulacrum. As modernism challenged the nature of reality and how it is perceived, Davis reminds us here that it is possible to see two sides of a building at once, and that often it really looks like only half of a ship is in the water even though our brains convince us that the other half is hidden behind the fish warehouse. Flatness and simplification of forms were characteristics that distinguished work of influential European painters like Picasso and Matisse, whose work Davis would have encountered during his stay in France.

Painting
James Beard had first-hand experience as a captain in the Union army during the Civil War. This painting, completed in the year the war ended, is a dramatic statement about the ever-present possibility of death on the battlefield.
[Gallery label text, 2007]
Were it not for details like the skeleton keeping vigil behind the cannon, the cruciform composition of the flag draped over the sleeping soldier, and the scattered playing cards suggestive of luck and chance, this painting would be a simple narrative about the Civil War. However, such potent symbolism imbues the work with layers of spiritual significance.
Perhaps the reminders of death and sacrifice that the artist included in his masterful painting emerged from his firsthand experience in the Union Army during the Civil War. The meticulously selected and carefully arranged details attest to the poignancy of the soldiers' situation and contrast with the implied violence that will occur on the morrow.

George Grosz was a German soldier in World War I and left his country for the United States in 1933 during Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. Ten years later, he painted The Wanderer in New York—his intensely personal response to his experiences—as World War II raged over the ocean.
[Gallery label text, 2024]
Ten years after fleeing Germany during Hitler’s rise to power, George Grosz painted The Wanderer in New York. As World War II raged over the ocean, Grosz created this intensely personal response to his experience as a German soldier in World War I and his 1933 emigration to the United States.
[Gallery label text, 2007]
Painted in the midst of World War II, The Wanderer is an expression of the artist’s recent life experience. George Grosz was an established painter in Germany who, like many others, spoke out against the totalitarian Nazi regime. For his own safety and that of his family, he relocated to the United States. The Wanderer was one of a group of so-called ‘hell pictures’; in a letter, he wrote:
I work a lot…I painted a little picture – The Wanderer –
myself of course…The resonance of explosion and
destruction often shakes me bodily.
The explosion and destruction was a reference to the war-torn European continent that he had left behind, as well as a reference to his own emotional volatility as he tried to adjust, with little success, to his new life in America, suggested in the painting by the seagrasses he knew from Long Island and Cape Cod beaches.
The Wanderer was probably one of the newest paintings acquired for the Encyclopedia Britannica Collection, as the collection was formed in 1943, the same year that Grosz painted this work. Stylistically, the painting’s expression of personal and cultural angst – achieved through desolate subject matter, somber palette, and unquiet line – was very much an alternative view to the more upbeat images of wartime artists like Norman Rockwell.

In the course of his long and distinguished career, Winslow Homer shifted his focus from robust descriptions of American life to studies of interaction between man and the powerful forces of nature, particularly the ocean. This evocative painting of his studio at his family’s compound on the coast of Maine in Prout’s Neck, near Portland, is considered one of Homer’s most masterful works.
[Gallery label text, 2007]
A foggy day on the coastal peninsula of Prout's Neck, Maine, inspired Winslow Homer to paint one of his most elegant and contemplative works. His studio and family home stand silhouetted between the darker cliffs in the foreground and the paler sky. The painting's composition balances strong diagonal and horizontal elements in the lower half with a monolithic sky punctuated by a circle of sun.
Homer was known for his many paintings of rural America, as well as his illustrations of the Civil War. In 1883, Homer left New York City, where he had been living, and settled permanently in Prout's Neck. During his years there, he produced some of the most thrilling marine paintings in the history of American art.

For George Inness, an adherent of the mystical Swedenborgian faith, landscape elements and colors had specific symbolic qualities. For example, he wrote that the moon is a ‘natural emblem of faith,’ reassuring the faithful that divine light still exists even though it is not directly visible in the night sky. In Inness’s philosophical system, blue is the color of faith.

Reginald Marsh inherited the Urban Realist interest in the act of seeing and being seen. His art often addressed sexuality in the urban environment, as in this painting of a burlesque hall.

A Rochester artist, Whitney Hoyt (also represented in this exhibition), purchased Starlings Flocking from a show in New York and immediately presented it to MAG. The Swedish-born B. J. O. Nordfeldt was recognized as a master of Expressionism and in her letter of thanks to the donor, Gallery director Gertrude Herdle Moore waxed rhapsodic in describing her reaction to his painting: “I cannot tell you whether I am hearing or seeing it more—or whether I have ever before been caught up into such a dynamic sensation of movement sweeping through space. The Van Gogh Starry Night did the same thing to me . . . [Those starlings] fill the air about you with their darting wings and cut it as if it were a visible substance . . . I have begun to hear a pulsating beat in the spiraling motion of the design and to feel surrounded by its luminous planes.”

Early in his career, William Palmer was a muralist for the WPA, earning $24 a week for his hospital and post office commissions. He went on to found the School of Art at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, and became a highly regarded painter of colorful, abstract New York landscapes.

Sculpture
For approximately sixteen years before he died at age 88, John Scholl created over forty imaginative sculptures that he stored in the parlor of his home in Germania, Potter County, Pennsylvania. A builder by trade, Scholl seemed to create these architectural forms as an extension of the decorative fretwork and scrollwork seen on the porches and gables of Victorian homes, many of which were made from pattern book templates. Incorporated into the whimsical creations were traditional European folk art motifs: birds, stars, and sunbursts.
Scholl was proud of his work, and enjoyed showing people through the collection; in good weather, he moved some it out into his yard. When he died of pneumonia, contracted after shoveling snow, Crested Swans was one of the pieces that surrounded Scholl's casket during the wake.

By overlapping a few simple forms, Dargis has created a lively and evocative scene that may have been inspired by memories of his Lithuanian home. Whether working in realistic or abstract styles, Dargis composed the elements of his prints and paintings in a bold and striking manner.

Andy Warhol regularly appropriated imagery from other artists. Here, he based his image on a photograph of hibiscus flowers by Patricia Caulfield in "Modern Photography", June 1964.
[Gallery label text 2012]
Warhol’s Flowers series was based upon a photo published in the June 1964 issue of Modern Photography taken by the magazine’s editor, Patricia Caulfield. Warhol’s appropriation of images was to have an enormous effect upon later artists—turn around to see Devorah Sperber’s appropriation of Grant Wood’s painting, American Gothic—but it was not appreciated by Caulfield who threatened to sue Warhol when she saw his Flowers. Although Caulfield never filed a lawsuit, Warhol did pay her for the use of her photo.

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary was Queen of Thuringia in the early 1200s. She was an advocate of the poor and gave herself entirely to serving the hungry, weak and feeble. She distributed alms in all parts of her royal territory, even giving royal robes and ornaments to the poor. In order to care personally for the unfortunate, she built a hospital and visited the inmates daily to attend to their needs. In art, she is frequently shown carrying a loaf of bread and a jug of wine, references to her devotion to feeding the hungry.

Drawing
When asked by Mrs. Horace Havemeyer, an American collector, why he so often portrayed dancers, Degas replied “Because I find there, Madame, the combined movements of the Greeks.”
This pastel was produced late in the artist’s life when his eyesight had begun to fail. It is possible that his diminished vision resulted in the heavy contours that surround the dancers and give only the barest suggestion of their facial features. Rather than attempting great detail, he concentrated on mapping out the unpredictable effects of theatrical lighting on the forms of the figures.

The son-in-law of Jan Brueghel and a friend of Peter Paul Rubens, Teniers achieved success in Antwerp and then moved to Brussels, where he served as court painter to the archduke Leopold Wilhelm and later to Don Juan of Austria. Tavern Scene is one of numerous genre paintings in which rustics carouse, uninhibited by notions of propriety or temperance. Such subjects frequently served a moralizing purpose, indicated here by the drawing tacked to the wall above the laughing drunkard. The bird flanked by eyeglasses and candlestick may illustrate the proverb, “What use candle and spectacles if the owl cannot and will not see?”

Painting
Le Prince studied with the rococo painter François Boucher and adopted his master's delicate manner and cool, pastel palette in his early work. Dating from late in his career, however, "The Visit" demonstrates a greater naturalism, reflecting the increasing popularity of seventeenth-century Dutch painting in eighteenth-century France. In this canvas, Le Prince has combined a genre scene with a panoramic landscape to suggest a gracious moment in everyday rural life. The subject of nobles visiting a peasant family would have appealed to the sense of humanity cultivated during the Enlightenment.

Japanese, Ukiyo-e
Print
This print illustrates the text of a poem by the Empress Jitô, who ruled Japan from 690 to 697. In translation, the poem reads
<blockquote>The spring has passed
And the summer come again;
For the silk-white robes,
So they say, are spread to dry
On the "Mount of Heaven's Perfume."</blockquote>
The "Mount of Heavenly Perfume" is the name of a hill southeast of the ancient capital of Nara. According to legend, the villagers of the region spread their winter clothing on the slopes of the mountain to dry. This print seems to show people bringing clothes to wash in the river and dry on poles in the background. What is actually shown, though, is the manufacture of linen cloth from flax fiber, a process that produces a very foul odor. In the original Japanese, the Empress has used the words <em>ama</em> and <em>kagu</em>, which mean respectively both "heaven and flax" and "to smell good and to smell bad." The last line of the poem, then, can also read "On the Mount of Flax's Stench," a verbal pun that Hokusai translates into a visual one.
