Uzi Buzgalo is a leading figure in the contemporary Deaf art community. In this portrait, Buzgalo celebrates George Veditz, a Deaf educator and advocate who was president of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) in the early 1900s. Veditz is credited for his innovative use of the still-new technology of film to preserve American Sign Language (ASL), which had endured attempts to suppress it. These films of highly skilled signers communicating about a variety of subjects became incredibly influential in spreading ASL and empowering the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
