Stella Waitzkin began her artistic career during the 1950s in New York City, a time when rules and expectations around art were being reinvented. Throughout her life, she experimented with many different kinds of media, including painting, performance, sculpture, and installation. Her varied practice eventually led to a unique process of resin-casting books and objects into singular, evocative sculptures.
Waitzkin was fascinated by the physical qualities of books, and she created intricate installations resembling libraries. By referencing books as carriers of knowledge and history, her sculptures challenge viewers to create their own stories. Originally composed in her apartment at the famed Chelsea Hotel—where she resided from 1969 until her death in 2003—these installations, pictured below, blurred the line between an artist’s life and work.
