This elaborately decorated small triptych was used for private devotion. The center depicts Christ’s Nativity. Together, the hinged wings flank the central image to tell the story of the Annunciation to the Virgin. Mary, with an open book in her lap, is on the right panel, while the winged image of the angel Gabriel is on the left.

Depicts the arms of the Holzhausen family of Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany; it is based on a woodcut by Joost Amman, published in "Stam und Wapenbuch," published in 1579. The 1599 date of the panel itself, however, postdates Amman's death.
