In 18th-century Britain, sterling silver was the “coinage of the realm,” and literally worth its weight. The ownership of silver goods, however, was more than a display of wealth; it was also an expression of a patron’s taste, education, and power. The government recognized the importance of the silversmiths’ trade to the economy, and closely monitored the quality and hierarchy of British artisans through requirements for silver weights and hallmarks. Their wide variety of goods found markets at the royal court, among a growing professional and merchant class, and through expanding international trade.
Quality British silver of this period has long been a favorite of private collectors. The majority of MAG’s collection of continental and English silver comes from the Woodward family, who donated over 70 pieces in the 1950s.

A yad, which means “hand” in Hebrew, is a pointer used to facilitate the reading of the Torah and to protect its delicate parchment surface. Usually shaped like a long rod with a small hand and pointing index finger at one end, the yad assists the reader to track the Hebrew text, which is written without vowels and punctuation.

Karl Kipp worked in the Roycroft community, first in the bookbindery and then in the copper shop. By 1910, he was head of the copper shop. The design of this vase was heavily influenced by the Wiener Werkstette style - simple shape, minimal design, and geometric patterning. The Roycroft "R" is incorporated into the applied silver motif on the front of the vase.

The Memorial Art Gallery recently acquired several outstanding examples of Jewish ceremonial art from the collection of Central Synagogue, the oldest Jewish house of worship in continuous use in New York City. All seven objects were made in southern Germany, a region important for the production of silver as well as the original homeland for many of the early members of Central Synagogue’s congregation.
These beautifully crafted works of art represent a range of ritual objects used in Jewish religious practice. The importance of beautifying such objects is eloquently captured in the principle of hiddur mitzvah. This expression, which literally means to beautify a commandment, is biblically grounded in Moses’ words following the Israelites’ escape from Egypt: “This is my God, and I will glorify Him.” (Exodus 15:2).
The collection includes ritual objects related to the celebration of the Sabbath, the spiritual focus of Judaism: a pair of candlesticks, a Kiddush cup and two spice containers. These were once used in the home, as was the Hanukkiah, an oil lamp lit during the eight-day celebration of Hanukkah. Also included is a Tas, a decorative and functional object that originally ornamented the Torah in a synagogue.
Kiddush is a blessing of sanctification said over wine during Sabbath and festival celebrations. A text from the Book of Exodus (20:8), "Remember the Sabbath Day and Keep It Holy," is inscribed in Hebrew around the rim of this Kiddush cup. Interspersed with the biblical text are three crowns that refer to a traditional proverb: "There are three crowns-- the crown of Torah, the crown of the priesthood, and the crown of kingship, but the crown of a good name exceeds them."

In her letter to the donor of this sculpture, then Gallery Director Gertrude Herdle Moore thanked him for the “prehistoric bronze handle in the form of a horned animal.” There is no record as to what the figurine might have been a handle for. It was initially thought to be from the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago southwest of Great Britain, but inquiries to scholars in that region revealed otherwise. The culture and date of origin for the little bronze animal remain unknown.

Liberty & Co., founded in London by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1875, was a purveyor of Japanese objects, exotic fabrics, and Art Nouveau silver and pewter. This vase is #030 in Liberty’s “Tudric” line of pewterware, introduced in 1901 and manufactured for them by W. H. Haseler, a Birmingham jeweler and silversmith. The stamp on the bottom tells us that it was made prior to 1914. The unplanished hammer marks are typical of the aesthetic of the time, which celebrated the mark of the craftsman’s hand.

18th-century Pennsylvania Dutch communities used five-sided stoves created with cast-iron decorated plates like this one. Often, they were decorated with Biblical scenes and sayings. This stoveplate is embellished with a scene showing the attack on Abel by his brother, Cain, and the inscription reads: CAIN. SEINEN. BRUTER. AWEL. TOT. SCHLUG (Cain killed his brother Abel). The plate is thought to have been cast at Durham Furnace in Northern Bucks County, PA.

Fueled by rich deposits of gold, the Asante engaged in extensive trade relations with European and African nations. Buyers and vendors used brass weights such as these to counterbalance gold dust on scales. Each Asante family had their own set of brass pieces. Unsurprisingly the vendors’ weights were often too heavy and the buyer’s weights too light. Many goldweights represented local proverbs with social or moral meanings that served as ethical reminders during the sometimes fraught ordeal of gold-weighing. If this weight was associated with a proverb, the cultural association has been lost to us.

The conclusion of the Sabbath is marked by the havdalah ceremony, which separates sacred from secular time. All the senses are evoked during this ancient ritual; to excite the sense of smell, fragrant spices, often enclosed in ceremonial objects, were passed among those present. The tower form as a spice container first appears in the 1500s.

This Burial Mask was created by a Chimu artist in the Chicama Valley on the North Coast of Peru between 1100 and 1470. Ruling from their capital city of Chan Chan, the Chimú state controlled a vast empire in the north and central coasts of Peru. They employed tens of thousands of artists, including skilled metalworkers that produced objects of precious metal for the nobility.
Masks such as this would never have been worn by the living. They played an essential role in death and burial and were placed on the funerary bundle. These decorative masks helped indicate the rank of the deceased.
The ornate, circular ear ornaments may have held actual feathers. The upper portion of the mask is decorated with puma heads and bent, stylized figures of warriors wearing elaborate feathered headdresses. Separate ornaments may have been attached to the mask near the eyes, around the nose and along the side of the face. The nose, which was raised in relief, has been lost.

This gold-covered plaque, made in the Ordos region of Inner Mongolia, shows two ibexes, or wild mountain goats, face to face, their curved horns arching over their backs. Fleet and nimble, the ibex was a favorite subject for artists in many ancient and medieval cultures; tradition holds that an ibex leaping from a mountain would land unharmed on its double scimitar-like horns. The owner of this intricate plaque would have sewn it on clothing or a horse harness as a display of personal wealth and status.

The Etruscans were famous for their bronze utensils and often made use of small-scale figures such as these to decorate them. Apparent, even here, is that skill in metalwork which resulted in the intricate designs of their jewelry.

The annual celebration of Hanukkah commemorates an historical battle for religious freedom in ancient Israel. It is remembered in the ritual lighting of lamps for eight consecutive nights.

In ancient Greece, gold wreaths were permanent and luxurious facsimiles of natural wreaths made of oak, myrtle and laurel leaves. Both gold and natural wreaths were an important aspect of ceremonial and religious life. They were often given as awards for victory in battle, public service, and excellence in athletics and the arts. Gold wreaths were also used as votive offerings to the gods and included in funerary rites as symbols of the deceased’s victories in life. Oak in particular was sacred to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, who spoke to his priests through the rustle of oak leaves.
Greek gold wreaths were made from a thinly hammered sheet of gold that was formed into a narrow tube over a core of pitch or resin. The tube was ornamented with leaves, also cut from gold sheet; these leaves were attached by stems that were either wrapped around or inserted into holes in the tube. Surface details were created with a variety of tools and punches.

These tiny lime scoops were used in the preparation of a drug called coca. Lime from powdered seashells was scooped onto a coca leaf, made into a ball and chewed. In ancient times coca was restricted for the use of the nobility. It is used today to calm the stomach, combat the effects of hunger and thirst, and relieve fatigue induced by exertion in the high Andes mountains.
A small hole in the neck of the bird allows for a thin cord to pass through, thus permitting the owner to wear this small, functional work of art.

Theories abound as to the meaning, symbolism, and function of these ancient bronze finials that represent the “Master of Animals,” one of the most important motifs in ancient Middle Eastern art. The central figure is a human male, his outstretched arms grasping the neck of long-snouted two-headed beasts with the beaks of eagles and round haunches with clawed feet. The figure may represent Gilgamesh, the superhuman hero of Mesopotamian mythology, or Sraosha, the early Iranian god of justice. What seems clear, though, is that this finial symbolizes humankind’s dominion over the predatory forces of nature.

Astrolabes are ancient hand-held astronomical and astrological instruments used to measure the height of the sun or a star above the horizon. These measurements, made by manipulating a series of circular brass plates, show how the skies will appear at a specific place at a given time. Although the Greeks invented the basic astrolabe more than 2,000 years ago, Muslim scholars had created sophisticated instruments by around 800 CE. They introduced the devices to Europe through Islamic Spain, or Andalusia, in the early 1100s, where they became a basic component in scientific education.

Like the tower form of 2006.56, the fish form is a popular shape for holding spice for the havdalah ceremony at the end of the Sabbath. The articulated body of the fish is flexible, allowing the scent of the spices within to be enjoyed.

candlesticks, judaica
Metalwork
The lighting of two candles marks the beginning of a Sabbath. The circular inserts at the top of these candlesticks are inscribed with names, one of a man, the other, a woman. These may have been engagement gifts, coming from the families of the bride and groom-to-be.
[Adapted from gallery label text, 2006]
underside, See surrogates, attached. Two sets of marks on each candlestick:. On base: A over C [or G?] P in script; oval with right profile head at left and 84 at right; what looks like two stamps over each other, one on top looks like חC [Cyrillic?]; Around top of each: O.C. / 1889; 84 [with shape like house?]
