Moore studied Venetian decorative techniques at the fames Venini Glass Factory in Murano, Italy. His Palla Series uses simple geometric shapes, such as the sphere or ball - "palla" means ball in Italian - to balance the base of the form. Moore explains: "I focus on the color, shapes, and proportions of the vessels, and the way light interacts with the work."

Glass
Although glass had been produced for millennia in Egypt and the Middle East, the industry developed rapidly during Republican and Imperial Rome. Skilled craftsmen set up workshops throughout the Empire, where they created mass-produced wares for myriad peoples and uses. This small jar, decorated with a menorah and probably used by Jewish pilgrims visiting holy sites in Jerusalem, was created long after the decline of Rome, though using the same advanced techniques developed under skilled Roman glassmakers.

Jewelry
This intricate souvenir jewelry set features 15 different Roman architectural wonders commonly visited by Grand Tourists, including the Pantheon, the Colosseum, St. Peter’s, the Forum Romanum, and the Column of Trajan. The small scenes are produced in micromosaic, using tiny oblong tesserae of glass and stone in numbers up to 1,400 per square inch. Micromosaic jewelry remained fashionable in Europe through the mid-1870s.

Small glass panels showcasing the coats of arms—specially-designed, unique combinations of lines, colors, and symbols that represent an individual or family—were especially popular among American collectors. While many were original, others were legitimate copies used to replace broken originals or decorate new and renovated buildings in the medieval or Renaissance style. There was also a large market for modern forgeries made specifically to serve an ever-growing market of collectors.
Of these three armorial panels [42.31, 42.34.3, 55.98], the only early example is the piece with the motto Bibe Si Sapis, which means “If thou art wise, drink.” The other two, both of which have women holding coats of arms, are modern, probably made in the late 19th or early 20th centuries.

This small glass roundel, probably created for an armorial window, depicts Otto IV of Brunswick (1175–1218), who served as the King of Germany, the King of Italy, and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Although Otto lived during the middle Medieval period in Europe, the artist has shown him in the guise of an emperor of ancient Rome.

The Barovier “Coppa Nuziale,” or wedding goblet, was made by the Venetian master glassmaker Angelo Barovier during the late 1400s. Originally designed for the marriage of the Duke of Ferrara, the piece is one of the most famous and frequently reproduced works of Renaissance glass in existence. The images on the bowl include wedding portraits of the bride and groom. A group of women on horseback ride toward a fountain in which, on the other side of the goblet, they are shown bathing nude.
Reproductions of this iconic Renaissance work represent the revitalization during the late 19th century of Murano’s centuries-long fame as a glassmaking center. One of the earliest figures in this effort was Antonio Salviati, whose adaptation of traditional skills to modern manufacturing processes promoted ornate and highly decorative glass as an accessible art form rather than one limited to the very wealthy. Many of the existing copies are attributed to his manufactory.

A river, the traditional symbol of the voyage between life and death, wends its way to the mountains in this beautiful window. Sunset Scene was one of a number of windows created by Tiffany Studios for Mount Hope Cemetery. It was commissioned by Thomas B. Dunn, a business and community leader who, after making his fortune from the licorice-flavored mouth freshener, Sen Sen, served as State Treasurer and Congressman.
Such an elegant memorial window, installed in a diminutive classical temple, speaks to the high social and economic standing of the deceased. For its long-term protection, the window was removed from its original cemetery location near the corner of Fifth Avenue and Grove Avenue and donated by the Dunn family to the Memorial Art Gallery.

He began the Seaforms series in the 1980s and continued through the 1990s, inspired by the movement and color of underwater creatures. Chihuly’s Seaforms delight the eye and mystify the brain with their simultaneous delicacy and power. The ribbed pieces shimmer and almost seem to move in the light.
Chihuly’s influence on the world of American craft has been remarkable and enduring. Founder of the glass department at the Rhode Island School of Design as well as the Pilchuck School of Glass in Washington State, he represents the best and most creative glassmaking of our time.

Rochester tycoon William Kimball, owner of the Kimball Tobacco Factory, hired Louis Comfort Tiffany to design the interior of his home and its furnishings at 145 Troup Street in Corn Hill. The opulent residence, called Kimball’s Castle, housed an art collection and a pipe organ. The window installed here was rescued by Harold Rand during the building’s unfortunate demolition in 1948.
Our thanks go to Valerie O’Hara from Pike Stained Glass Studio for her generous conservation of the window.

William Morris’ compositions seem more like archaeological finds than contemporary glass. Their colors, surface treatment, forms and markings are references to ancient cultures and mythic beliefs, inviting the viewer to step into a shared past.
Morris began as an assistant to glass artist Dale Chihuly in Seattle. He has become a leader in the studio glass movement and creates his distinctive assemblages with a team at the Pilchuck Glass School, America’s pre-eminent glassmaking center.
The Gallery’s new acquisition is part of the Suspended Artifact series that Morris created in the 1990s. Forms in the shape of skulls, horns, and pouches are blown, reheated, carved and embellished in a strenuous process that has culminated in pieces that appear to be lit from within and charged with spiritual significance.
