During the Roman occupation of Judaea, Jews restamped foreign coins with Hebrew inscriptions and Jewish symbols, such as the palm tree signifying the holy menorah of the Temple. These coins provided financial and moral support to their rebellion against Rome in 133 CE.
[Gallery label text, 2009]
Led by Shimon Bar Kochba, Judaea rebelled against Roman rule for the second time in 132 C.E. The revolt was brutally crushed by Julius Severus in 135. This coin, crudely restruck over a Roman one (bronze was at a premium), features a palm tree on one side and grape leaves on the other.

A standard inscription inside the obverse border proclaims the king’s divine right to rule: “The Mazda worshipper, the divine Shapur, King of the Kings of Iran, heaven-descended of the Gods.”
[Gallery label text, 2009]
The Sassanian Empire, founded by Shapur’s father Ardashir in 224 A.D., was ruled from Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) until the Arab invasion of 636. Also called the New Persian Empire, it stretched in its heyday from Spain to India, just south of the Roman Empire, with which it constantly fought. The beautifully designed and executed coins minted by the highly civilized Sassanid dynasty follow the Roman formula, with the ruler’s profile on the front, but the details of the crown, hairstyle, and shaped beard are absolutely Persian.

Numismatics
The reverse of this coin depicts a Roman army camp gate. The inscription translates as “To the Foresight of our Emperors” in honor of Constantine’s imperial ancestors.
[Gallery label text, 2009]
Constantine is depicted as the proud ruler, with three beaded strands tied around his head, rather than with the traditional laurel wreath of the victorious warrior. The inscription gives the Roman form of his name, Constantinus, with the abbreviation AVG for Augustus, the title conferred on emperors. Constantine, the first Christian emperor, chose the city of Byzantium (now Istanbul) as his capital and dedicated it to the Virgin Mary. He rebuilt it from 325 to 330 C.E. and decorated it with famous artworks from all over his dominions.

Sassanian kings wear crowns that incorporate symbols associated with the Zoroastrian religion and idea of divine kingship. Khusro wears a winged crown, in contrast to Shapur’s turret crown [seen in 95.24].

As the owner of a hardware store, Hiram W. Dixon, in conjunction with the Farmers Bank in Hudson, New York, issued this note valued for 50 cents as a substitute for currency. Known as merchant scrip, this was a form of credit or a means of exchange. Hiram W. Dixon issued scrip for 5 cents, 10 cents, and 25 cents as well as two different types of 50-cents scrip. The padlock in the center of the note was an appropriate symbol for Hiram W. Dixon’s hardware business.
The inflation associated with the Civil War led to a dramatic increase in the prices of precious metals, causing coins to disappear from circulation which resulted in hoarding. Merchants, farmers, and community groups, in conjunction with the banks, substituted their own private scrip as a convenience and a necessity. The notes were used in good faith as a means of payment for small purchases when currency was unavailable.
