This work was not published during Morisot's lifetime; this edition was published in December 1907 in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts
Berthe Morisot was a founding member of the Impressionist group and exhibited regularly at their exhibitions. Although best known for her fresh, light-filled oil paintings, she also produced a number of etchings. Her favorite subjects were women in domestic settings.
This print is a self-portrait of the artist with her daughter.

Francis Seymour Haden was an English surgeon and a well-known etcher who founded the Society of Painter-Etchers in 1880. He studied the original prints of great Old Master artists such as Rembrandt and Albrecht Dürer; his intense studies helped bring about the revival of etching in England.
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was Haden’s brother-in-law, and the two artists collaborated for some time on a series of etchings of the Thames River. The relationship between the artists deteriorated, however, and the project was never completed.

Commissioned for John Chamberlaine's 1812 edition of "Portraits of Illustrious Personages of the Court of Henry VIII," featuring the original drawings by Holbein copied by a number of engravers. Mary Fitzroy, the Duchess of Richmond and Somerset, was born in 1519, married Henry Fitzroy, illegitimate son of Henry VIII around 1533, and died in 1557. This portrait was made around the date of her marriage. Holbein's original sketch that provides the basis for this work is now in the royal collection of the United Kingdom.

Bracquemond participated in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, and was closely associated with Impressionist artists like Degas and Pissarro through his active participation in the Society of Painter-Engravers. He helped establish the technique of etching as an artistic medium in the latter half of the 19th century.
Bracquemond’s subject matter included scenes of modern life and leisure; he was particularly gifted in his use of etching to create images of light, shade, movement, and atmosphere, all of which were important to the Impressionist movement.

Édouard Manet, one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, was a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. Although Manet never exhibited with the Impressionists or fully adopted their ideas and techniques, his work influenced and was influenced by them. His choice of modern, urban subject matter and his use of dramatic lighting effects reflect just two similar areas of interest. This etching and aquatint was exhibited at the Salon in 1869.

From the series SOUVENIRS DU CONGRÈS DE LA PAIX (Memories of the Peace Congress). The six prints comprising the series appeared in issues of CHARIVARI in September 1849. The Peace Congress had taken place in August 1849. The caption for this work is "La Paix universelle étant décrétée, l'honorable sir Cobden trouve moyen d'utiliser les généraux qui se croisaient les bras," or "Universal peace having been decreed, the honorable Sir Cobden finds ways to use the generals who now stand with arms crossed." Richard Cobden was a British politician who had taken part in the Congress.

Camille Pissarro is sometimes called the “father of Impressionism.” The theme of women bathing in country streams during the idyllic season of summer appears repeatedly in Pissarro’s graphic work from 1894 to 1897, when he created twelve lithographs and eight etchings on the subject. All of these intimate scenes take place in the shady bend of a stream and focus on the physical freedom of the nude bathers as they enjoy the open air and light of nature.

Edgar Degas lived in Montmartre, a lively area of Paris that was filled with cafés, music halls, and theaters. Degas, who was a great patron of these entertainment venues, made four lithographs of the well-known singer Emélie Bécat, shown here in a performance at the café Ambassadeurs.
In order to emphasize the stark contrasts of such dramatic night scenes, Degas began by blackening the printing plate completely with ink; he then extracted light-struck forms such as the gas lamps, fireworks, and moonlight seen in this lithograph.

Eugène Béjot’s etching of London’s Waterloo Bridge shows the bridge from the opposite direction of Monet’s paintings of the same subject. Béjot, who specialized in prints of cityscapes, made this etching when he visited London in 1899—the same year Monet began his Thames series paintings.

This lithograph is [no. 2] from Kollwitz' earliest series of prints, "The Weavers' Rebellion" (1893-1898) which tells the tale of the weavers' suffering and their eventual uprising. Loosely based on works by Emile Zola and Gerhard Hauptmann, Kollwitz found inspiration in writers who shared her opinions on the subjugation of the working classes.
Death depicts the many hardships endured by the weavers that subsequently incited their rebellion. Perhaps due to poverty, poor working conditions, insufficient health care, or all of the above, the woman leaning against the wall quietly passes away. The skeleton represents Death. His touch delivers this woman to her final sleep. While husband and son are unaware of the interloper in their midst, the candle flame leans away from the chilling presence of Death. Kollwitz' use of a skeleton to symbolize Death was intended to help make her message as clear and direct as possible.

This small scene conveys the intimacy of a young girl's personal devotion. With skillful technique, Kollwitz creates a darkened space in which the young girl's face and hands glow as if lit from within, increasing the sense of the spiritual. The subject's humble posture, closed eyes, and parted lips serve to further emphasize the unselfconcious and absorbing intensity of her prayers.
