This leaf from the New Testament of a Bible—the fundamental book of the Christian religion—contains the end of the text from St. Paul’s first letter to Timothy and the beginning of the text from the second. Like books today, the script at the top of the page, which reads “Thimo II,” serves as a chapter heading.
As seen in the second column of script, the books are divided by the elaborately decorated, elongated letter “P,” the center of which contains the image of a man sitting on a stool and writing. This figure represents one of Christ’s apostles, St. Paul, whose compiled letters of advice and encouragement to contemporary Christian followers form a large part of the New Testament.

Sculpture
This beautiful representation of the Madonna and Child is typical of a type known as the “Virgin of Tenderness,” which developed in France in the early- and mid-1300s. The elegant quality of the Virgin’s dress and her courtly stance suggest her elevated status and nobility, while the Christ Child’s pose and the manner in which his mother supports him evokes an informal, tender mood.
The Virgin’s crown, which alludes to her role as Queen of Heaven, rests on a veil that symbolizes her humility. Although only a small fragment now survives, the Virgin initially held a flower in her right hand, probably a rose or lily, while the Christ Child holds a bird. In Christian tradition, these symbols refer to the story of Christ’s birth and sacrificial death.

Sculpture
Mary Magdalen was one of the most popular saints in medieval Christianity. As one of Christ’s most devoted followers, she was present at his crucifixion, death, and burial. Known for her faith; she was one of the first to believe that Christ was truly resurrected. The covered box that she holds is a container for the spices or perfume used to anoint Christ’s body after his crucifixion.
Both wood and stone sculptures were customarily painted during the Middle Ages. Gilders and painters, in fact, were sometimes paid more than sculptors for their share of the work. This statue probably stood alone on an interior altar where it served as an object of devotion. Because the sculpture was protected from the elements, it retains enough polychromy to give an idea of the original appearance.

This is one side of an intricately carved ivory diptych. The upper register of the piece shows the Crucifixion; the lower depicts the Nativity. Scenes from Christ’s birth and death were often paired as a shorthand reference to key moments in the Christian narrative. Luxury ivories were produced in France in large numbers during the 1300s.
