Painting
Henry Raeburn was almost exclusively a painter of portraits. The demand for his work was great enough to sustain a career in Scotland, and his commissions came primarily from the members of high society in and around the growing city of Edinburgh. Raeburn’s portraits are known for their naturalness and sensitivity to the sitter. They often take the form seen here, with a seated three-quarter length figure pictured in a landscape, painted as if seen from below.
This portrait is of a young noblewoman, Mary Johnston, the wife of James Johnston and the daughter of William Baillie, Lord Polkemmet, a Scottish judge whose portrait Raeburn had also painted.

Painting
Krishna is one of the most popular and revered gods in the Hindu religion, worshipped as the eighth avatar, or incarnation, of the god Vishnu. In art, Krishna, which literally means "black" or "dark as a cloud," is usually portrayed with blue-black skin. As a youth, he appears as the divine lover surrounded by adoring gopis, or female cowherds.
Although Krishna's favorite of his many lovers was the beautiful gopi Radha, he was frequently careless of her affections. This image probably refers to a specific episode in their relationship: Radha, jealous of Krishna's attentions to other gopis, refuses to rejoin him in the forest. Krishna in turn makes an impassioned plea to Radha's friend, who intervenes and encourages their reunion.
The cult of Krishna held as a distinctive trait the exploration of divine and human love. In literature and myth, his youthful flirtations with the gopis are interpreted as symbolic of the loving interplay between God and the human soul.

Painting
Shiva as the divine ascetic and the embodiment of the creative-destructive force can be identified by many attributes, each having symbolic value. He wears a tiger/leopard skin wrap (he has conquered pride), snakes coil around his hair, neck, and arms (cosmic energy, regeneration), he holds an axe (destruction) and a deer (regeneration, control of man's unsteady mind). His matted hair contains the crescent moon (time), from the top of his head flows the river Ganga (fertility), and he has a third eye in the center of his forehead (wisdom).
Shiva's consort or female half, Parvati, shown in quite elaborate dress, sits next to him as a musician entertains them. The white bull in the lower corner is Nandi, Shiva's vahana or vehicle, who, in India, is often worshiped in Shiva's place.
