Drawing
During the summer of 1646, Lambert Doomer, a former student of Rembrandt, visited his brothers who were living in Nantes, France. He traveled along the Loire Valley into northern France, where he made topographical studies of the countryside, châteaux and cities such as Angers, Saumur, Tours and Amboise. His drawings are unusual in that they are naturalistic and unidealized representations of actual places. His work, acquired by many important Dutch collectors, was so popular that during the early 1670s Doomer reproduced an extensive group of replicas on account-book paper. This drawing is one of his second-generation reproductions.
