Painting
One of the most prominent and influential New York City graffiti artists, Daze is best known for his wall writing and spay-painting on subway cars during the late 1970s and early 1980s. By the mid-1980s he was transitioning to painting on canvas.
Daze’s pictures capture the grit and energy of the city he loves. The 7 Yard features the artist’s iconic graffiti markings in acrylic, the soft impression of a young woman’s face rendered in spray-paint, and a hyper-detailed depiction of a train yard in oil paint, which is remarkably similar to the train yard near MAG here in Rochester.
Rochester’s WALL\THERAPY project sponsored four large-scale exterior murals by Daze. Visit www.wall-therapy.com for more information.

This portrait of Safi Osman was created as a part of Sarah Rutherford’s Her Voice Carries, a mural and community arts project that celebrated five women in Rochester who use their voices to empower and strengthen their communities. Originally from Somalia, Safi Osman teaches sewing skills and is instrumental in Refugees Helping Refugees, an organization she helped found.
Rutherford’s monumental mural portrait of Safi can be found at the Reformation Lutheran Church at 111 N. Chestnut Street in downtown Rochester.

Uzi Buzgalo is a leading figure in the contemporary Deaf art community. In this portrait, Buzgalo celebrates George Veditz, a Deaf educator and advocate who was president of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) in the early 1900s. Veditz is credited for his innovative use of the still-new technology of film to preserve American Sign Language (ASL), which had endured attempts to suppress it. These films of highly skilled signers communicating about a variety of subjects became incredibly influential in spreading ASL and empowering the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Growing up in Rochester, Unique Fair-Smith attended the World of Inquiry School No. 58, just down the street from the Memorial Art Gallery, and he received his Master’s in Fine Arts from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2021.
In 2021, Fair-Smith’s The Eclectic Man was exhibited in the 67th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. Though relatively small in size, the presence and impact of this portrait was felt by many visitors to that exhibition. Fair-Smith seeks to depict his sitters on their own terms as much as possible: “This portrait of my friend Jordan Whiteside-Johnson captures his dynamic nature, and places him within the canon of fine art in a way that has not always been allowed to communities of color. I hope other people can see this work and feel empowered, my message is that people like Jordan are present, noteworthy, and powerful.”
