Gallery labet text 2013
Influenced by the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, Bearden was friendly with the writer Langston Hughes and jazz musicians Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. He was fascinated by jazz, trying his hand at songwriting for a short time. Bearden’s work bears parallels to the rhythms, intervals, variations, and improvisational devices of music. He stated, “I paint out of the tradition of the blues.”
Bearden was a pioneer of the collage style, explaining “The medium I used was chosen intentionally because assemblage forges a variety of contrary images into one unified expression.”
Bearden was a founding member of the 1960s Harlem art group, Spiral, formed “for the purpose of discussing the commitment of the Negro artist in the present struggle for civil liberties.”

Marietta Ganapin's kaleidoscopic, seemingly abstract collages started life as reproductions of art works printed in exhibition brochures and catalogues. She made this particular piece especially for the exhibition Extreme Materials at the Memorial Art Gallery in 2006, cutting tiny details from hundreds of postcards featuring the Egyptian inner coffin of Pa-Debehu-Aset in the Gallery collection, 2000.11.2. Even though today's technology would allow her to generate these intricate patterns fairly quickly on a computer, she prefers the painstaking work that allows her to create hand-crafted objects. The end result resembles a vivid Buddhist mandala.

Painting
Collages hang on refrigerator doors and the walls of museums. Tearing and cutting paper, positioning and repositioning the pieces, and layering them on top of each other until they create a satisfying composition—these are practices that preschoolers and the most sophisticated artists share.
Artist Robert Motherwell worked in collage in preparation for some of his larger paintings, and he also created collages that were finished works of art themselves, such as his Night Music series. About the colors, one writer described “the ochre and the black of ancient cave paintings, charred by fire, darkened by age; and there are earth colors, of clay and soil. And there are the lighter, fragile eggshell colors of day. These are all offered up, in the bands and layers of their forms, whether perfect in their angles, or incomplete, ragged.”
[Label text from It Came From the Vault exhibition, 2013]
Much of the art of the twentieth century challenges the viewer to leave the comfort of recognizable subject matter and confront more directly color, form and expressive technique. As an example, this collage by Robert Motherwell is representative of his nearly lifelong effort to expand the conventional boundaries of painting. Motherwell, who gave voice to the aesthetics and philosophies of the New York City -based Abstract Expressionists, created works imbued with tension and paradox. For him and his fellow painters (among them Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko), the canvas presented a surface on which to record gesture and emotion, liberated from the need to record an objective reality.

In 1970, Rauschenberg did a large installation called "Currents" for Dayton's Gallery 12 in Minneapolis. The work filled the entire gallery, measuring 6 feet high by 54 feet long. It consisted of collages made from newspaper clippings that were transferred to silkscreen. Of the images, Rauschenberg said "The world condition permitted me no choice of subject or color and method/composition." He then made two portfolios, "Features" and "Surface Series," using the images from the Minneapolis installation. In "Surface Series," he used combinations of the images, sometimes placing the negative of one image over the positive of another. A final inking with a black ghostly pattern gives them a moiré effect.

Painting
Jaune Quick-To-See Smith’s collaged paintings incorporate the desert colors of her childhood with the spontaneous brushwork of Abstract Expressionism. She has said about her work:
My art, my life experience, and my tribal ties are totally enmeshed. I go from one community with messages to the other, and I try to enlighten people.
Famous Names accomplishes Smith’s self-appointed task. The canvas is dominated by the image of a traditional Native American buckskin dress. The photographs and text around this central form refer to stereotypes that the dominant non-Native culture has used to describe Native Americans as simultaneously exotic and ridiculous, and to marginalize them. As Seneca artist and site manager of Ganondagan
G. Peter Jemison writes in an essay on this painting, the “famous names” referenced in the title offer a composite of “a record of people with ancient ties to the land and of the often-bungled attempts of English-speaking writers to capture what a translator related.”

Translated as “Sun and Flowers for Liora,” this work contains many references to the things most precious in the artist’s life. Liora, the artist’s daughter, dominates the top section of the image while Puerto Rican Taino Indian symbols throughout the composition refer to Sanchez’s heritage.
