In this rare print, the actor Nakamura Noshio I, whose career flourished from 1770-1777, is shown playing the role of an old man. The depiction of his face gazing into the distance is uniquely realistic; his relaxed and alert posture as he leans on his stick is thoroughly convincing. This print employs an unusually subtle palette of rust with deeper highlights, yellow with a white pattern, and green.

The actor Iwai Hanshirô IV, whose career flourished from 1787-1804, is shown here in the role of a young samurai. The actor is identified as Iwai by his <em>mitsudomoe</em> crest, with its pattern of three commas in a circle, on his cloak; another, perhaps his <em>kaemon</em>, or "alternate crest," is on his sleeve.
As in his print of the actor Nakamura Noshio I (97.105), the subtlety of Shunkô's technique is seen in the restrained use of color, the complexity of the pattern in the actor's yellow outer cloak, and in the soft appearance of dappled grey material against the geometric design on the door.
