Linocut
Bequest of Isabel C. Herdle, 2005.73
Hilda Altschule Coates was primarily a self-taught artist who was a painter and a sculptor as well as a printmaker. In the 1950s she was one of the founders of the Arena Group, the first artists’ group in Rochester to promote the work of contemporary artists.
Coates was honored in 1945 with the Lillian Fairchild Award for painting. This award has been given annually by the University of Rochester since 1924 to a Rochesterian in recognition of his or her single contribution of a creative work.
Linocut is a relief technique. A design is cut with sharp tools onto a thin block of linoleum mounted on wood. The raised uncut surface is inked, paper is put on top of the block, and a brayer is rolled across the surface to transfer the ink to the paper. Areas that have been cut away remain white, or the color of the paper.

Like many modernists, Dargis seems to have been influenced by art of other cultures. In the center of this painting is a figure that very much resembles African art that was being acquired and exhibited at MAG by 1961, the year this work was done.

The soft-edged haziness of the architectural forms in this painting, an effect resulting from the layering of different paint colors, gives it a dreamlike quality that contrasts with Dargis’s graphic, linear woodcuts. The artist was a master of multiple techniques.

Dargis enjoyed sending handpainted holiday cards. In addition to the customary expression of season’s greetings, this tradition also served as a public relations tool, reminding his friends and patrons of his steady supply of prints and paintings. Gertrude Herdle Moore, MAG’s second director, was an ardent supporter of Dargis’s work during his time in Rochester, so it is not surprising that the inscription on this back of this painting says Mrs. G. Moore Seasons Greetings- A.L. Dargis-.

This charming card, sent to Rochester artist Sylvia Davis, includes a simple menorah-like form that suggests a connection to the Jewish holiday Chanukah as well as to Christmas.

Dargis often layered large calligraphic strokes against backgrounds containing small and delicate elements, as though inviting the viewer to look through a screen to another world beyond.

The gauzy delicacy of line in the border and the almost winglike forms of the figure’s legs create an illusion of weightlessness that corresponds with the fragility of the small plant barely resting her hands.

In this print, the grain of the wood block that was used for printing has left a ghostly impression on the paper. Dargis most likely printed each impression in the edition several times, using one or more plates to print different areas of the image. Artist and MAG preparator Carol Acquilano states, “With Dargis, as with many printmakers, selective inking and wiping is very common, even with an edition.”

By overlapping a few simple forms, Dargis has created a lively and evocative scene that may have been inspired by memories of his Lithuanian home. Whether working in realistic or abstract styles, Dargis composed the elements of his prints and paintings in a bold and striking manner.

Dargis’s 1951 arrival in Rochester and interest in his work on the part of MAG’s director, Gertrude Herdle Moore, and her sister, curator Isabel Herdle, prompted an exhibition of Lithuanian artists and culture. This exhibition was part of the ongoing Homelands series, begun at MAG in 1919, to highlight the cultural inheritance of various national groups represented in the Rochester population. Accompanying the exhibition was a performance of Lithuanian music and dance, for which Dargis designed this program cover. A solo exhibition of Dargis’s work accompanied the show.

Here, black lines dance across a spectrum of color. The artist took advantage of the watercolor medium to blur the rainbow hues, although in an interesting twist, the rainbow itself is black.

St. George is a very important figure in Lithuanian culture, even appearing on the country’s coat of arms. He is a protector from evil and a guardian of cattle. His feast day, April 23, is celebrated with many agricultural traditions (perhaps the reason for the stems that flank the saint’s name in the print). Dargis has illustrated the familiar legend of St. George killing the dragon, but given it his own expressive form, with the small white horse pitted against the writhing dragon, whose tail winds all the way around the mother and child. Like the proper knight that he was believed to be, St. George is suited in armor and holds a shield that is anachronistically decorated with an image of himself!

Using just a few expressive curves, Dargis has abstracted the essence of the harpist’s engagement with her instrument. He used the medium of the woodcut technique to his advantage in creating, with a few simple lines, the strings of the harp and the texture of the harpist’s skin. In this print he also employed the collagraph technique, in which a part of the image (in this case the harpist’s dress) are impressions of textured materials glued to a cardboard or metal base.

Dargis was known for his large works and groupings, as well as for the smaller prints and paintings included in this exhibition. The group of three paintings (70.66.1-.3) was in the 1970 Rochester-Finger Lakes exhibition. They are united by bold color and also by the monumental, mask-like appearance of the human forms. According to Creative Workshop teacher and artist Alice Gold, who was his friend and student, Dargis was very resourceful and used unconventional materials like house paint and commercial grade printers ink to achieve the effects that he was seeking in his work.

William Ehrich became a major contributor to the art community in western New York after arriving in Buffalo from Europe in 1929. He established a successful sculpting career despite the onset of the Great Depression, and taught both ceramics and sculpture at Memorial Art Gallery and the University of Rochester. MAG owns 13 Ehrich sculptures; The Provider showcases the closed-form, simplified, and idealized style of early modernism. The lamb may have held special significance to Ehrich, who was a practicing Methodist.

Frans Wildenhain was a distinguished professor of ceramics at Rochester Institute of Technology. In this beautiful piece, he alludes to the classical myth of Daphne, who was pursued by the god Apollo. She appealed for help and was turned into a laurel tree. Wildenhain expresses the transformation by the gradual plainness of the body of the pot turning into stylized, glazed vegetative forms.

Possibly a reference to the pond near his home and studio in Pittsford, this work is one of Wildenhain’s earliest two-dimensional mural forms. Wildenhain, who founded and then taught at RIT’s School for American Crafts from 1950 to 1970, was godfather to the donors’ daughter Anastasia. She remembers visiting his studio as a child and playing with clay on his potter’s wheel. Anastasia also recalls Wildenhain complaining, while pounding his heart, that Watson, a scientist, thought with his brain while he, an artist, thought from his heart.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Dargis’s work is its fluid shift from almost folk art-like simplicity to sophisticated abstraction. Yet, even in his most abstract work his imagery is never completely removed from the natural world.

What looks at first glance like a tree reveals itself to be a grouping of three figures topped with Dargis’s characteristic triangular faces, set against a domed form. The image floats against a blue background – perhaps the sky – creating an ethereal effect.

Sculpture
A Yugoslav émigré, Radakovich was a painter, sculptor, and metalsmith who studied and worked in Rochester in the 1950s. Ever one to be observant of the potential inherent in found materials, he transformed a rock from Lake Ontario into the base of a sculpture and cast and soldered pieces of flotsam and jetsam into a work that reveals itself to be a bird.

Edythe Shedden, at the age of 91, remains one of Rochester’s most respected artists. A lifelong traveler, she journeyed to Turkey four times. This print was inspired by the harbor at Marmaris, a popular port that hugs the coastline of the Turkish Riviera. Shedden never made this image available for sale, so MAG’s example, a bequest from her friend Isabel Herdle, is a rare treasure indeed.
