Dargis enjoyed sending handpainted holiday cards. In addition to the customary expression of season’s greetings, this tradition also served as a public relations tool, reminding his friends and patrons of his steady supply of prints and paintings. Gertrude Herdle Moore, MAG’s second director, was an ardent supporter of Dargis’s work during his time in Rochester, so it is not surprising that the inscription on this back of this painting says Mrs. G. Moore Seasons Greetings- A.L. Dargis-.

Dargis often layered large calligraphic strokes against backgrounds containing small and delicate elements, as though inviting the viewer to look through a screen to another world beyond.

Dargis favored Japanese rice paper for many of his paintings, as it absorbed the paint and created a stained effect.

Dargis was known for his large works and groupings, as well as for the smaller prints and paintings included in this exhibition. The group of three paintings (70.66.1-.3) was in the 1970 Rochester-Finger Lakes exhibition. They are united by bold color and also by the monumental, mask-like appearance of the human forms. According to Creative Workshop teacher and artist Alice Gold, who was his friend and student, Dargis was very resourceful and used unconventional materials like house paint and commercial grade printers ink to achieve the effects that he was seeking in his work.
