With his extensive knowledge of science, anatomy, and the natural world, Albrecht Dürer epitomized the ideals of the Renaissance. He was the greatest artistic genius of his time and essentially changed the conception of printmaking in Germany. Dürer learned the techniques for engraving from his family of goldsmiths, but was later apprenticed to Michael Wolgemut, a well-known Nuremberg painter and maker of woodcuts. He was uniquely placed to learn and work in engraving, woodcut, and painting, although without his brilliance, these opportunities would have been unfulfilled.

Color wood engraving
Gift of Mrs. John McKinney, 97.168
A Rochester native, Havens is considered part of the color woodblock revival of the early 20th century. Self- taught as a printmaker, he specialized in woodcuts and wood engravings, but he also painted. His design for the logo of the Print Club of Rochester, which he helped found, remains in use to this day.
Color wood engraving is a relief technique. A design is cut with sharp wood gouges on end-grain wood. The raised uncut surface is inked with a brayer. Paper is laid on it and the ink is transferred by burnishing with a hard surfaced tool, such as a baren or spoon. Multiple blocks are created for each separate color. In order to economize, some colors are intentionally printed together to create a third color.

"Returning Sails at Takanawa" adapts the classical trope of "Returning Sails at a Distant Bay" (enpo kihan) to the well-known view of Edo bay along a stretch of the Tôkaidô Road at Takanawa in the Shiba district of Edo. Smaller boats with white sails ferry goods to shore from the large dark ocean-going vessels anchored in the bay. In the unceasing traffic along the Tôkaidô Road, the major highway leading in and out of the city to the south, we see a mounted samurai and his servant in the lower-left corner passing through the granite sides of the gated portal to the city. Coming towards them is a group of pilgrims dressed in white, followed by two more samurai borne in palanquins, and another two palanquins are parked at the side of the teahouse. Large hand-carts for carrying building materials are seen in the lower right-hand corner, while at the right workers appear to be building a larger restaurant or teahouse. Two sign-boards next to a mile-post at the seating area carry official regulations pertaining to travelers entering Edo—these signs were a common sight at every bridge and approach to the city, along with the heads of executed criminals.

In this scene, local Rochester artist Walter Cassebeer shows us where the country meets the city. These sheds were a holding place for the produce coming in from valley farmers, destined for sale at the farmer's market to urban dwellers. This tradition carries on today in Rochester's Public Market.

Ukiyo-e
Print
Komori Soseki designed kacho-e, or “bird and flower prints,” during the 1920s and early 1930s. Although little is known about his life, Komori Soseki’s work, like that of the artist Yoshida Hiroshi seen at the left, represents the shin-hanga, or “new print,” movement in Japan after the end of the Meiji period in 1912. Shin-hanga artists worked in the traditional manner: they created art, primarily of characteristically Japanese subject matter, which was then produced as a print by a publisher rather than the artist himself.
Even though kacho-e prints were not as favored by Japanese collectors as the earlier ukiyo-e prints of landscapes and actors, they were very popular with Western collectors and became lucrative exports for Japanese publishers.

Kananginak is known as “the Audubon of the North” for his precisely rendered images of birds. One of the first Inuit trained as a printmaker (he settled in Cape Dorset in the 1950s for health reasons), Kananginak had studied and hunted birds since he was a boy. He knows birds so well that he does not need photography or even an actual model to draw from, just his imagination. His work differs greatly from most of his contemporaries in its realism.
The Common Eider, a sea-duck that breeds in the Arctic, is the largest duck in the Northern Hemisphere. Its arrival announces the coming of summer.
Along with Iyola Kingwatsiak, whose work is also in the MAG collection, Kananginak was one of the founding members of the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative. Kananginak became the Cooperative’s first elected president.

Kenojuak, one of Canada’s most famous artists, claims to create images that please her and that she does not imbue them with special meaning or stories. As with most Inuit artists, her subject matter tends towards that which is most familiar – animals. The owl and the raven have played important roles in the legends and stories of the Inuit. Dogs performed a critical task for Inuit survival at one time as they pulled the hunter’s sled across the ice.
