1900-2000, 20th century, by Rochester artists, churches, cityscapes, skyscrapers, watercolors, World Trade Center
Watercolor
Rochester artist Ralph Avery juxtaposed the World Trade Center with Trinity Church in a colorful scene painted shortly after the towers were completed in 1973. In reality, the church, a symbol of old New York (it was founded in 1696), is dwarfed by neighboring skyscrapers, but from Avery’s vantage point, the cross-topped steeple competes with the surrounding buildings for the highest point in the scene. Perhaps Avery was inserting his own point of view about the competing roles of God and Mammon in that Wall Street neighborhood. As an illustrator for magazines that were bastions of middle-class, conservative values – Saturday Evening Post and Reader’s Digest — Avery may have been expressing the publisher’s values as well.

This image of a New York City construction site is based on a film still from Charles Sheeler’s 1920 film collaboration with photographer Paul Strand, Manhatta. In the ten-minute film, the artists track the dynamism of Manhattan through the course of a day, focusing on the unique pulse and geometry of the city’s machinery, vehicles, and architecture. Manhatta provided Sheeler with numerous images from which he later painted.
The title of this painting, Totems in Steel, frames modern engineering, industry, and architecture in quasi-religious terms. Sheeler wrote, “In a period such as ours when only a comparatively few individuals seem to be given to religion, some form other than the Gothic cathedral must be found. Industry concerns the greatest numbers—it may be true, as has been said, that our factories are our substitute for religious expression.”

After the war, John Wenrich stayed in Europe and sketched the cities and landscapes of France. In this bleak sketch of the French city of Verdun, dated January 18, 1919, Wenrich captured the devastation of modern warfare; a sight most Americans had little experience viewing first hand. The Battle of Verdun, a year-long battle that ended before America entered the war, resulted in nearly one million casualties and was the bloodiest battle of the war.

In 2003, the Gallery received 50 drawings and watercolors that Rochester artist John C. Wenrich painted in France after he served in the First World War. This group includes both sketches and more fully developed images, like this one of Le Gros Horloge, or The Great Clock, in Rouen, France. Wenrich’s paintings show his fascination with the culture, history, and architecture of France. The pedestrian street below this clock links the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431 with the cathedral Claude Monet painted repeatedly, in different seasons and weather, during the 1890s.

Harwood Steiger, a master of the watercolor medium, lived for many years in Fairport, NY. Steiger’s industrial landscape is a ramshackle vision. The title, Fungus, implies Steiger’s impression of industry as a growing blight on the landscape. However, the almost-comical characterizations suggest a more harmless than threatening presence.
