Colin Campbell Cooper wrote an essay in 1911 where he recommended his wife’s home town of Rochester as a subject for artists: “Rochester is filled with subjects which need no other idealization to make beautiful than an eye receptive to the glory of light and color and the ability to register these things on canvas.” Here, the artist’s receptive eye captured from a northeast angle downtown’s Main Street Bridge in contrasting colors of warm brick and the cool water. The shops and offices on the Main Street Bridge over the Genesee River illustrate Rochester’s commercial boom in this era, where every inch of space was needed to support the businesses of the central city.

American art, by Rochester artists, portraits, women
Painting
This portrait is thought to have been painted around the time of the artist’s marriage to fellow painter Emma Lampert in 1897. Colin Campbell Cooper also painted the Gallery’s Main Street Bridge, Rochester. Emma, a Nunda native, attended Wells College in Aurora, New York, and the Art Students League. She taught at Mechanics Institute, RIT’s predecessor, in the early years of the 20th century, and was an active member of the Rochester Art Club. She and her husband were intrepid travelers, and they painted scenes throughout Europe and as far afield as India.

American-born painter Colin Campbell Cooper infused life into his paintings with an impressionist’s sense of air and light. After training in Philadelphia and Paris, he married fellow-artist and Rochester native Emma Lampert and the couple travelled around Europe and much of the world. Cooper painted subjects ranging from the Taj Mahal in India to the Main Street Bridge in Rochester, and was represented in MAG’s inaugural exhibition in 1913.

Painting
This painting of two women weaving by the cool light of a single window won a prize at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. The naturalistic depiction of the crowded interior, with natural tones enlivened by the red blouse of one woman and the blue wool being woven, shows Emma Lampert Cooper’s award-winning grasp of composition and color. However, by the time it was given to MAG, 70 years later, it was mistakenly labelled as a work of her husband, Colin Campbell Cooper.
Emma Lampert Cooper was the first vice president of the Rochester Art Club when it was founded in 1877, and later its president. She taught art at the Mechanics’ Institute (now RIT) from 1893 to 1897.

Born in Brooklyn, Kathleen McEnery studied with noted painter Robert Henri at the New York School of Art. Her work was of such high quality that she exhibited two nudes at the famous 1913 Armory Show in New York City.
There are two paintings, Colette and Mood, by Kathleen McEnery exhibited in this gallery. Although both are portraits of women, they say a great deal about two very different periods in the artist’s career. McEnery painted Colette when she was living in Paris between 1908 and 1910. This elaborate full-length portrait of a young French model, beautifully dressed and heavily made up, was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1911. Mood, painted about 15 years later, reflects the more intimate, sensitive nature of her work after she married and moved to Rochester.

Fritz Trautmann—landscape architect, painter, colorist, teacher—was an important figure in Rochester’s art community. He was at the center of the city’s bohemian life with one foot in the upper echelon of Rochester society, with friends like businesswoman Kate Gleason and patron of the arts Charlotte Whitney Allen. He was known to have painted many murals in East Avenue mansions.
Artist and influential MAG board member Kathleen McEnery Cunningham painted this portrait of her friend Fritz Trautmann. It seems Trautmann was pleased with the likeness as the portrait hung above his mantel for many years. Upon his death, the painting came to the Memorial Art Gallery with his estate.

1900-2000, 20th century, by Rochester artists, paintings, portraits, women
Painting
Kathleen McEnery’s artistic career drastically changed course after her marriage to Frank Cunningham and subsequent relocation to Rochester. Early on, she studied in New York City with Robert Henri, exhibited two paintings in the pioneering 1913 Armory Show, and continued her education in Paris. Although she continued to paint, her work consisted primarily of intimate portraits of friends and acquaintances. Marjorie Quetchenbach, one of McEnery’s friends, served as the model for this portrait. The title Mood, however, identifies the moment and personality of the sitter rather than her name.

Dargis enjoyed sending handpainted holiday cards. In addition to the customary expression of season’s greetings, this tradition also served as a public relations tool, reminding his friends and patrons of his steady supply of prints and paintings. Gertrude Herdle Moore, MAG’s second director, was an ardent supporter of Dargis’s work during his time in Rochester, so it is not surprising that the inscription on this back of this painting says Mrs. G. Moore Seasons Greetings- A.L. Dargis-.

Dargis often layered large calligraphic strokes against backgrounds containing small and delicate elements, as though inviting the viewer to look through a screen to another world beyond.

Dargis was known for his large works and groupings, as well as for the smaller prints and paintings included in this exhibition. The group of three paintings (70.66.1-.3) was in the 1970 Rochester-Finger Lakes exhibition. They are united by bold color and also by the monumental, mask-like appearance of the human forms. According to Creative Workshop teacher and artist Alice Gold, who was his friend and student, Dargis was very resourceful and used unconventional materials like house paint and commercial grade printers ink to achieve the effects that he was seeking in his work.

Painting
Originally from Rochester, the painter and writer Douglas Gorsline attended the Art Students League in New York City and taught at the National Academy of Design. He was profoundly influenced by the artistic styles of cubism and realism. He tended to use fragmented compositions as a means of depicting reality, in particular reality combined with movement.

Title is taken from Memorial Exhibition.
George Herdle was one of the most versatile and influential leaders of Rochester’s arts community around the turn of the twentieth century. In addition to being a fine landscape painter, he was president of the Rochester Art Club for nearly two decades and, in 1913, he became the first director of the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester.
Herdle’s legacy is visible in the building and collections that surround you, as well as in the tradition of connoisseurship and artistic vitality that he transmitted to his two daughters, Gertrude Herdle Moore and Isabel C. Herdle. Gertrude took over at the Gallery as director after her father’s untimely death, and Isabel worked by her side as curator and associate director for many years. The family was honored by the naming of the Herdle Fountain Court on the second floor of the Gallery.

Ada Howe Kent was a Rochester painter and watercolorist who exhibited nationally with the American Water Color Society. Having studied with James McNeill Whistler in Paris, Kent became enamored of oriental art and accumulated an extensive collection of Japanese prints.
A daughter of John H. Kent, first vice-president of the Eastman Dry-plate and Film Company (forerunner of the Eastman Kodak Company), the artist was known for her philanthropic activities, most significantly for the gift of Kent Hall in 1916 to the Rochester Y.W.C.A. as a residence for women.

Helen Searle grew up in Rochester and taught art in Batavia, New York. In 1860, she moved to Dusseldorf to study with the distinguished painter Johan Wilhelm Preyer, whose still lifes were considered the finest in Germany (see below). He took a particular interest in Searle, and it is clear that she was greatly influenced by him. Preyer, in turn, was a devoté of 17th century Dutch artist Jan de Heem, whose work is on view on MAG’s second floor.

Painting
One of Rochester's most picturesque river crossings is the Veterans' Memorial Bridge (Ridge Road), completed in 1931. In this painting, Carl Peters records the complex engineering systems that were used to build the bridge's series of seven granite-faced concrete arches. Most likely, his vantage point was the steep west bank of the Genesee River, whose green waters flow far below; work has been completed on both sides of the river but the bridge is still lacking its large central span.
On the bridge is a dedicatory plaque donated by World War I Gold Star Mothers - women who lost sons in World War I. At the dedication, the president of the group said:
Great bridges across flowing waters are
indicative of the continual labors of life.
In the very presence of continual change,
they seem to connect the past with the
present, even as they connect the East
with the West, the North with the South...

1800-1900, 19th century, by Rochester artists, men, paintings, portraits, views of Rochester & western New York
Painting
The artist of the painting signed the back of the canvas with a flourish “Asahel Powers.” Powers was a self-taught portrait painter who traveled throughout the countryside in search of portrait commissions. Unfortunately, history has lost the name of this dapper gentleman who, we infer by the books and writing cabinet visible behind him, was a learned man of means. His interests and likely profession are further indicated by "The Genesee Farmer" in his hands, a popular journal dedicated to agriculture and horticulture founded in Rochester in 1831.
This portrait broadly tells the story of early Euro-American settlers who were cultivating and living off of the land of the Genesee Valley. It does not capture the story of the Indigenous people who had lived in those lands for hundreds of years prior to the arrival of the European settlers. Coincidentally, this portrait was painted during the infamous Trail of Tears, a brutal upheaval in American history over land rights in which the military forcibly moved over 60,000 Indigenous people (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, Osage, and Seminole, including thousands of their Black slaves) to an undesirable stretch of prairie land, now in Oklahoma. During the forced march, many thousands of men, women, and children suffered and died from exposure, disease, and starvation.

When Director George Herdle invited artists to exhibit their work at the Memorial Art Gallery, he often included an invitation for them to visit Rochester, give a talk, and meet potential patrons. Such was the case with Walter Elmer Schofield's 1915 exhibition. In March, he came to Rochester, spent time braving cold weather in various locales and painted at least two canvases. As he stood by his easel on the Driving Park Bridge overlooking the Lower Falls of the Genesee River, a news photographer happened upon him and took his picture for the March 3, 1915, newspaper. The headline? "Artist Braves March Weather to Paint Lower River".

Painting
For thirty-three years Fritz Trautmann’s passion for painting inspired his students in MAG’s Creative Workshop. Over his lifetime, he developed an approach to color that was scientific as well as mystical, and in 1942 he painted Galaxy to teach his theories to students. MAG purchased the painting from the artist in 1956. It has been a visitor favorite ever since.
Despite appearances, not a single drop of black paint was used, as Trautmann believed it dampened the natural vibrations of color. Focusing on what he considered the four primary colors rather than the traditional three, Trautmann wrote,
Galaxy symbolizes the great truth that every phenomenon in life involves ALL of life. Each globe of Galaxy is composed of EXACTLY THE SAME ELEMENTS. The entire spectrum wraps itself around each globe with unvarying uniformity. Warm red plays across the field from the left, bright yellow streams down from above, cold blue comes in from the right, and deep violet rises from the bottom.

In River Garden, we see the two passions of Fritz Trautmann’s life: color and landscape architecture. In a letter to the painting’s donors, Trautmann wrote, “This is a corner of my River Road garden. I’ve made many gardens in my day, but this one gave me the most pleasure. It was built in the ruined foundation of a barn that burned many years ago. As I remember it there were thirteen different levels… It was located about midway between the old River Bend Inn and Balentine bridge [sic] on the east side of the Genesee River.”
Although he lived in the city of Rochester, Trautmann sought rural surroundings in the summer. He stayed in the house attached to this garden in the 1920s; by the early 1930s he purchased and refurbished an old farmhouse and its gardens on Canadice Lake.

The architect and designer, Claude Bragdon, introduced his friend Fritz Trautmann to magic squares, in which arranged numbers equal the same amount in the verticals, horizontals and long diagonals. In lines that follow the numbers of a magic square in their natural order (1, 2, 3…), Trautmann observed orbital patterns replicating natural forms. On March 4, 1912 Bragdon wrote in his diary, “Trautmann [has] discovered the spiral law of space.” From this, Trautmann developed his Principal of the Orbit, a philosophical explanation for creation, evolution, and existence:
“I am borne spinning along in the great whirlpool of evolution. It is because I am a child of nature that I am able to conceive only spinning and spiraling things – whirling worlds, universes of nebulae, stars, planets, satellites; universes of molecules, atoms, electrons, protons; universes of embryos, nuclei, chromosomes, genes. By reflection I rotate; my universe turns because I myself turn…my sphere of activity assumes an orbital motion because I am the spinning center of it.”

American art, by Rochester artists, cityscapes, houses, paintings, views of Rochester & western New York
Painting
The 1839 Pitkin House, just a few blocks away from MAG at 474 East Avenue, was one of the first mansions built in the area. The rutted dirt of the street contrasts with the elegant brick edifice of the house, but wooden braces along the road supporting newly-planted trees reveal that East Avenue was being gentrified. William Pitkin, who selected the lot and had the house built, was at first a druggist, but went on to become a banker, an alderman, a University of Rochester trustee, and the mayor of Rochester in 1844-45. Later, another well-known Rochester entrepreneur, Daniel Powers, lived in the house. He opened the first public art gallery in the city in his grand Powers Building at the Four Corners.
This painting was made by Rochester artist Charles Willson during Powers’ tenure in the house. At a time when paintings of houses were used to demonstrate the wealth and good taste of the homeowners, Willson was clever enough to depict the house from an angle that shows the deep lot and additions at the back, something that would not have been seen if he’d painted the house from the front.
