Painting
Nathaniel Hurd (1730-1778), silversmith, goldsmith, and engraver, was a member of a distinguished Boston family of silversmiths. In addition to creating a number of silver pieces, he was well-known for his bookplates, which were designed for many distinguished colonial families including Loyalists and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and were based on heraldic motifs (to which they may or may not have been entitled). Hurd also designed a plate for his own family, as well as bookplates for both Harvard and Dartmouth Colleges. The bookplates provide an unusual link to the social and intellectual climate of the times, and literally speak volumes about sociocultural aspirations of eighteenth-century America.
Hurd was a contemporary of Copley’s. This ca. 1765 portrait, Copley’s first to depict a fellow artisan in working costume, had been preceded by an earlier miniature that Copley had painted of Hurd in 1755.

It was a common practice to decorate the bows and sterns of sailing ships with sculptures made by expert carvers. Often, these creations were embellished with painted carved figures—hence the term 'figurehead'—and occasionally symbols that identified the ship's owner. This sternboard has both. It would have been placed in the rear - the stern - of the ship. Tradition has it that the sternboard's ship was owned by Elias Derby, a prodigiously wealthy merchant from Salem, Massachusetts whose fleet of ships traveled to remote parts of the world carrying trade goods.

18th-century Pennsylvania Dutch communities used five-sided stoves created with cast-iron decorated plates like this one. Often, they were decorated with Biblical scenes and sayings. This stoveplate is embellished with a scene showing the attack on Abel by his brother, Cain, and the inscription reads: CAIN. SEINEN. BRUTER. AWEL. TOT. SCHLUG (Cain killed his brother Abel). The plate is thought to have been cast at Durham Furnace in Northern Bucks County, PA.
