Painting
The form of Shiva represented in this work embodies Shiva's role as the unifier of opposites - life/death, creation/destruction, ascetic/erotic, male/female. Ardhanarishvara, or the Lord Whose Half is Woman, is the primordial androgyne and the true form of creative power - male and female in one.
If you look closely at the figure of Shiva seated under the tree, you will notice that the right half has white skin, wears a yellow dhoti, sits on a tiger skin and carries a trident, while the left half has yellow skin, wears a red sari, and sits on lotus petals. The right side represents the male, with common attributes of Shiva, and the left, the female.
The appearance of Shiva in this form is cause for celebration, illustrated by the elephants playing in the river, acrobats performing various feats, and musicians playing music. Even other gods come to pay tribute: Narayana appears with blue skin offering a lotus, and his vahana or vehicle Garuda, the eagle, offers flower garlands. Brahma, the creator (with four faces), also pays homage.

Hindu, Indian, Krishna
Painting
This painting portrays the Hindu deity Krishna as a philosopher-prince conversing about religious doctrines with other royals, who are shown on pedestals of descending size according to their rank. Other characters include sages and pilgrims who appear in regular order on a horizontally-oriented rectangular panel. The simplified linear treatment of the figures and the limited color palette of red, green, yellow and black relate this Hindu work to the painting tradition of the Jain religion, which comprised ascetic vows undertaken by both monks and laymen. These paintings feature hieratically-organized figures and text on palm-leaf surfaces that were then gathered into books.

Painting
According to Indian Hinduism, three gods comprise the Trimurti, or sacred trinity: Brahma, the Creator; Shiva, the Destroyer, and Vishnu, the Preserver. In this illustration from an illuminated Hindu manuscript, two of these gods-Shiva on the left and Vishnu on the right-are shown discussing religious or philosophical matters.
In religious art, the identity of most figures can be established by their attributes, or distinctive physical characteristics or objects. Here, Shiva is portrayed as androgynous, pale-skinned, and half nude, which represents his transcendental nature and his embodiment of the union of male and female. His posture shows his status as an ascetic yogi; the tiger skin on which he sits represents his conquest of pride and control over the mind. Seated on a throne to Shiva's right, the preserver god Vishnu has skin "the color of dark clouds." He is traditionally shown with four arms holding sacred and symbolic objects. His front arms signify his activity in the physical world; those in back, his role in the spiritual realm.

Instead of using one-point perspective, which gives the perception of looking through a window into real space, this artist has employed other devices to show depth. Overlapping shapes indicate that one building is in front of another, while placing people and walls higher up in the picture plane illustrates that they are further in the distance. Also notice that the building decoration is very plain, except around the most important figure, the nobleman shooting doves.

This miniature depicts a scene from the epic Hindu poem “The Ramayana.” In it, Rama (the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, the preserver of creation) and his army have been defeated by the demon king Ravana. The monkey Hanuman (Rama’s most devoted follower) has brought Mount Dronagiri and its medicinal herbs from the Himalayas in order to bring Rama and his army back to life. While Hanuman was flying through the sky with the mountain top, Rama’s brother Bharata saw something strange above and assumed it was a demon and shot his arrow at it. When Bharata learned of Hanuman’s mission he sent him on his way with his blessing.

This image is from book ten of the Bhagavata Purana which recounts the life of the Hindu god Vishnu. Vishnu, the preserver of the worlds has ten incarnations and book ten deals with the eighth incarnation - Krishna. Brindaban is the place where Krishna spent his childhood with his foster family and is considered a holy Hindu city.
