With his extensive knowledge of science, anatomy, and the natural world, Albrecht Dürer epitomized the ideals of the Renaissance. He was the greatest artistic genius of his time and essentially changed the conception of printmaking in Germany. Dürer learned the techniques for engraving from his family of goldsmiths, but was later apprenticed to Michael Wolgemut, a well-known Nuremberg painter and maker of woodcuts. He was uniquely placed to learn and work in engraving, woodcut, and painting, although without his brilliance, these opportunities would have been unfulfilled.

From Cornelisz van Haarlem's series of The Four Disgracers. The full set depicts Tantalus, Icarus, Phaeton, and Ixion, each of whom fell while trying to enter the sphere of the gods. Ixion fell in love with Hera, the wife of Zeus; as punishment, Zeus bound Ixion to a flaming wheel which revolved continually in Tantalus, the Greek Hell. Both Ovid and Virgil wrote about Ixion's fate.

Reverse copy after a drawing by Albrecht Dürer.
Public baths for both men and women enjoyed great popularity in Renaissance Germany; women’s baths in particular were frequent subjects of artists like Albrecht Dürer and his followers. Images of female nudity often carried erotic overtones, as seen here in the woman at center, who gazes directly at the viewer while turning her body in a frontal pose. These depictions of the female nude sometimes carried moral and menacing messages, as they were also used to portray women as prostitutes and witches.

Gallery label text 2013:
Elizabeth Catlett honors the rural working poor in this commanding image of a strong, dignified African American woman fieldworker who, though worn from her labors, maintains her internal fortitude.
Catlett devoted her career as a sculptor and printmaker to addressing issues of social justice, especially the struggles of African American women. “I make work for my people,” Catlett has said, “not for an elite, and I’ve paid a price for my commitment.”
Based on her own experiences, Catlett pursued subjects that were personally significant, such as her grandmother’s stories of slavery and her own experience of being denied admission to the Carnegie Institute of Technology solely on the basis of race.

In 1975, Jacob Lawrence and twelve other artists were asked to respond to the question, "What does independence mean to me?" The prints made by the artists comprise the Kent Bicentennial Portfolio: Spirit of Independence, commissioned in honor of the American Bicentennial.
Jacob Lawrence's parents migrated from the south to New York City, so the theme of migration was one that had great meaning to his personal history. He said, "During the post World War I period millions of black people left southern communities in the United States and migrated to northern cities. This migration reached its peak during the 1920's. Among the many advantages the migrants found in the north was the freedom to vote. In my print, migrants are represented expressing that freedom."

Leighton was one of the finest engravers of her time. Born in London, England, she graduated from the Slade School of Art and also attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. She learned wood engraving during a revival of the craft and had access to skilled masters. Leighton began her career reproducing prints in several English publications, and simultaneously developed her work during sketching trips to France, Italy and the Balkans. In 1939 she immigrated to the United States, where she exhibited and lectured widely and won numerous commissions. She was most well-known for writing and illustrating over 65 books reflecting on agricultural lifestyle and the contrasts of urban modernization. Leighton taught at Duke University, lectured at the National Academy of Design and received honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
