Painting
Home Late is the earliest identified painting by Mortimer Smith. The shadowy interior of the frontier cabin demonstrates his mastery of the genre scene: the rifle hanging from the ceiling side by side with drying meats and vegetables, supper cooking in the kettle suspended in the stone fireplace, and the dog sleeping peacefully by the fire. Smith is equally adept at capturing the warm glow cast by the fire as it contrasts with the cold light of the winter scene beyond the doorway. The child pausing in the doorway heightens the emotional ambiguity of the scene as he surveys the cabin's interior, perhaps to gauge the mood within as he returns home late from skating.
Smith's landscape and genre scenes suggest familiarity with his better-known contemporaries, like Albert Bierstadt and Eastman Johnson. Certainly, early exposure to the work exhibited at the Cosmopolitan Art Association in Sandusky provided Smith with models of painting styles that continued to influence him throughout his life.

"Night Rain on the Xiao and Xiang" becomes "Night Rain on Akabane." The white cartouche at the approach to the bridge carries the seal and name of Echizen-ya Heisaburô, publisher of the series, with the round official "approved" (<em>aratame</em>) seal of the government censor. In the upper left corner are Hiroshige's signature and seal and the seal of the publisher Izumi-ya Ichibei.
In the lower left corner is Akabane Bridge across the Meguro River (now little more than a small canal under a superhighway). We are looking south across the river at the outer military barracks of the mansion of the Arima of Kurume, low white buildings set with red gates and roofed with blue tiles. Since 1688 the samurai Arima family was charged with fire prevention at the important Zôjôji temple nearby that is now behind the viewer (see "Evening Bell at Mt. San'en," 87.34.5), and on a hill behind the compound looms their fire-watch tower (<em>hinomi yagura</em>)—these tall watch-towers were among the most familiar sights in the combustible city of Edo.

Painting
Like many artists, Thomas Cole traveled extensively, sketching views that he would later include in finished (and much larger) paintings. On a trip to the Upstate New York region, he sketched Deh-ga-ya-soh Creek at what is now Letchworth State Park in Mount Morris. Later that year, he used the sketch to create this study, which ultimately became the subject of the 'Genesee Scenery' (1847, 51 x 39 1/2 inches, owned by the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design).

When Director George Herdle invited artists to exhibit their work at the Memorial Art Gallery, he often included an invitation for them to visit Rochester, give a talk, and meet potential patrons. Such was the case with Walter Elmer Schofield's 1915 exhibition. In March, he came to Rochester, spent time braving cold weather in various locales and painted at least two canvases. As he stood by his easel on the Driving Park Bridge overlooking the Lower Falls of the Genesee River, a news photographer happened upon him and took his picture for the March 3, 1915, newspaper. The headline? "Artist Braves March Weather to Paint Lower River".

Painting
This painting belongs to a series of works produced during the spring and summer of 1882, while Monet visited Pourville, a town on the Normandy coast. As he explored the beach and the rocks exposed at low tide, Monet found a startling diversity of viewpoints that enabled him to create some of his most dramatic and unexpected compositions. In all of them, Monet placed himself far out across the beach, a little to the east of Pourville. He juxtaposed the cliffs in the far distance with the fragmented forms of the rock shelves in the foreground, using unique brushstrokes to convey the movement and light of the water and clouds.
Monet’s technique gradually changed from completing paintings out of doors to one of making hundreds of concentrated studies on location. He then compiled and reworked these many sketches in his studio, where he created the final canvases.

1900-2000, 20th century, landscapes, paintings, waterfalls
Painting
With the introduction of modernism, landscapes painted by American artists become deeply personal exercises. Unlike the emphasis on panoramic vistas in the 19th century, modernist artists allow their personal connection and response to a waterfall or a tree become the main subject of their painting. This waterfall in the Maine woods would have held particular interest for Marsden Hartley, who felt a spiritual connection to Maine and its natural resources.

20th century, boats, by Rochester artists, East River, rivers
Drawing
In the early 20th century, Rochester architect Walter Cassebeer sketched many of the same subjects as Louis Lozowick, Hugh Botts and Ralph Avery, but with a more intimate and delicate hand. Even a grimy operation like the Curtis & Blaisdell coal storage facility, on the East River at 58th St., is poetic when seen through Cassebeer’s eyes.
Walter Cassebeer received his architecture degrees from Columbia University and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After his training in France, he worked for the firm of Everett, Waide, Wells, Bosworth & Platt before returning to practice architecture in Rochester. It is most likely during his tenure with Charles Platt’s firm that he captured these New York vignettes.
In Rochester, Cassebeer’s work can be seen at the Henry Lomb Memorial, in the neighborhood of Upper Falls Boulevard and St. Paul St. Also, his measured drawings of
architectural details of New York State houses can be seen at the Wenrich Library of the Landmark Society.
