Painting
Every pictorial element in this full-length portrait of a young boy refers to his aristocratic heritage and high status in society. His costume is made of a richly-textured fabric trimmed with buttons of gold; the elegant purse at his waist, his fashionable small plumed hat and the golden hilt of his sword attest to the wealth of his family. The coat of arms on the gilded medallion he holds in his right hand clearly identifies him as a member of the Bracciforte family of Piacenza, one of the richest cities in Renaissance Europe. A book, flute and allegorical statue of Fame, shown here as a winged figure holding two long, thin trumpets, are on a table at his right; they suggest the importance of education and music in the highest strata of Renaissance society.
For decades, this portrait was attributed to the painter Niccolò dell’Abate. Recent scholarship, however, has suggested that it is the work of Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli, who was well known for his portraits of the Farnese and other notable and aristocratic families in the Duchy of Piacenza as well as the nearby Duchy of Parma. These two duchies united only a few years after this portrait was painted.

Painting
This altarpiece is painted in the style of Nardo di Cione, one of the most influential Florentine painters working in the decades following the plague, or Black Death, of 1348. In the central panel the Madonna holds the Christ Child, who bears a scroll with the beginning of the inscription “I am the light of the world.” On the left, John the Baptist holds a scroll reading “Behold the Lamb of God” and points toward Christ; on the right, St. Peter displays the key to the kingdom of heaven and respectfully covers his hand to hold the Bible. On the far left and right of the polyptych, or multi-part painting, are Sts. Francis and Dominic, founders of the two most important mendicant monastic orders.

Sculpture
This sculpture was originally part of the tomb of Philip the Bold, who was the ruler of the Netherlands and regent of France until his death in 1404. Forty mourning figures, called pleurants, form a procession around the base of the tomb. Each is placed in an arcade characterized by gothic architectural forms. The gisants, or funerary statues, of the Duke and his wife rest on top of the tomb.
The tomb of Philip the Bold, originally in the Carthusian monastery of Champmol at Dijon, France, was destroyed in the French Revolution. Many of the surviving fragments, including the top of this arcade, were salvaged and then sold to collectors. The tomb was extensively restored from 1818 to 1823 and now stands in the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon.

Sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri (r. 1501-1517), the last ruler of Mamluk Egypt (1250-1517), presented a multi-volume Qur’an to the madrasah, or theological seminary and law school, located in his extensive mosque complex in Cairo. This section contains the text from Surah (chapter) 46, v. 1 (the Dunes) through Surah 51, v. 29 (the Winnowing Winds). Although the highly-decorated inscription on the opening folio states that Qansuh al-Ghawri presented the Qur’an on July 20, 1503 (Muharram AH 909 in the Islamic calendar), the style of script and illumination suggest that the manuscript itself dates to the late 1400s.

Abelam yam masks were never worn by humans. They are so small because they were made to adorn the long yams grown by the Abelam people of Papua New Guinea. These long yams, which were not eaten, grow up to 6-9 feet and were exchanged between men as a form of community building. An Abelam man’s prestige was measured in direct proportion to the size of his yams. Special long yams with anthropomorphic features were considered living supernatural beings and were lavishly decorated with paint, feathers, shells, leaves, and masks, and then publicly displayed. The interlacing between solid bands refers to the caterpillar found on yam vines.

Fueled by rich deposits of gold, the Asante engaged in extensive trade relations with European and African nations. Buyers and vendors used brass weights such as these to counterbalance gold dust on scales. Each Asante family had their own set of brass pieces. Unsurprisingly the vendors’ weights were often too heavy and the buyer’s weights too light. Many goldweights represented local proverbs with social or moral meanings that served as ethical reminders during the sometimes fraught ordeal of gold-weighing. If this weight was associated with a proverb, the cultural association has been lost to us.

This mythical guardian figure, called a Genius, wears a two-horned helmet and fringed garment and carries a double-handled dagger, all attributes of his divine nature. His hands gesture protectively toward a flowering tree, just visible at the right edge of the sculpture. This relief, once brightly painted, is a fragment from the Northwest palace built by the Assyrian king Ashirnasirpal II (883—859 BCE) in his capital city at Kalhu, now the Iraqi city of Nimrud. Dozens of huge stone slabs carved with scenes of human and divine figures decorated the palace walls.
[Gallery label text, 2009]
This relief is a fragment of a larger composition of similar figures that once decorated one of the palaces of King Ashurnasirpal II, who ruled Assyria from 883 to 859 BCE. He established his capital at Kalhu, now the Iraqi city of Nimrud. Carved in a technique typical of Assyrian bas-reliefs, with contours deeply channeled to make them discernible in diffuse light, the figure’s facial features and musculature are carefully modeled. The hair and garments are also carved in detail, enhancing the decorative effect that the Assyrians favored in such reliefs.
The wings and the two-horned helmet worn by the figure, called a Genius, are attributes of his divinity. That he is a protective deity is implied by his gesture toward the tree form, which suggests the care of a farmer for planted crops. The palmettes of a tree behind the figure’s right foot separated this figure from a similar one, now in the Vatican Museum in Rome, facing in the opposite direction.
The motif of tending to these tree forms appears on many of the more than 315 Assyrian reliefs in collections outside of Nimrud, and is believed to represent an act that was part of ritual ceremonies. While such ceremonies remain unexplained, their frequent representation in palace reliefs suggests their importance to Assyrian court life.
"I, Ashurnasirpal, the king whose glory is mighty, took Kalhu and changed its ancient mound… A palace of boxwood, mulberry, cedar, cypress, pistachio, tamarisk, and poplar… for my royal dwelling and for my lordly pleasure I founded therein, I adorned and made glorious.”
King Ashurnasirpal II, who ruled Assyria from 883-859 BCE, so described the founding of his new capital city at Kalhu (modern-day Nimrud) on the banks of the Tigris River. Ashurnasirpal’s most elaborate project was the construction of the Northwest Palace, which included state apartments, a throne room, administrative offices, a harem and a tomb. Built during his reign and completed by his successors, the palace was decorated with huge stone slabs that were carved with scenes of figures in relief and inscribed with a record of important events during Ashurnasirpal’s reign. The Gallery’s relief, Winged Genius, probably comes from this palace.

In many cultures, gods and spirits take the form of animals. Selected for their physical or behavioral traits, features of different animals are combined to create mythical creatures whose symbolic powers are greater than those of ordinary beasts. This antelope crest mask combines the curved horns of an antelope, the curious snout and scales of a pangolin (a kind of anteater) and the squat body of an aardvark—all animals that dig up the earth. This makes the mask a fitting representations of Chi Wara, the supernatural being the Bamana believe taught humans to farm. Chi wara masks were worn in male/female pairs during dance performances in the fields that taught and encouraged good farming. Today, because of conversion to Islam and a variety of social changes due to westernization, the Chi Wara masquerade is now performed for entertainment and cultural pride.
The small pieces of red cloth attached to the snout of this male Chi Wara may have originated in the woolen bandages imported by the French during the First World War. In Bamana culture, red is the color of danger and is often restricted to men of certain status.

1000-1400, Chinese, Guanyin: Chinese, statues
Sculpture
This aspect of Guanyin, enthroned on his legendary mountain abode, Potala, was especially favored in China during the 12th and 13th centuries. The figure is seated in a position of Royal Relaxation. Its rustic base, visible at the left, symbolizes a rocky ledge of the mountain paradise, from which Guanyin beholds with sublime compassion the sufferings of earthly beings.
Public temple images such as this, gilt and richly polychromed, were often installed in an elaborate naturalistic setting. They combined the two concepts of the immutability of the Divine and the transitory nature of the world.

This gold-covered plaque, made in the Ordos region of Inner Mongolia, shows two ibexes, or wild mountain goats, face to face, their curved horns arching over their backs. Fleet and nimble, the ibex was a favorite subject for artists in many ancient and medieval cultures; tradition holds that an ibex leaping from a mountain would land unharmed on its double scimitar-like horns. The owner of this intricate plaque would have sewn it on clothing or a horse harness as a display of personal wealth and status.

This pair of nesting coffins once held the mummy of Pa-debehu-Aset, an Egyptian official from the city of Asyut, midway down the River Nile.
Pa-debehu-Aset’s mummy, now lost, would have been placed in the anthropoid, or human-shaped, coffin. The anthropoid coffin would have nested in and been protected by the rectangular outer coffin, called a shrine coffin because it resembles the sacred shrine of a god. Both of Pa-debehu-Aset’s coffins are decorated with images and symbols of the gods, goddesses, spells and prayers that would guide his soul into the afterlife.
Like all ancient Egyptians, Pa-debehu-Aset believed that the mummy was the eternal dwelling place for the spirits of the deceased. The divine powers of gods and goddesses would protect him during his life and after his death. Because of its human shape, the anthropoid coffin could serve as a substitute body should Pa-debehu-Aset’s mummy be destroyed.

This figure of King Ny-user-ra wears a royal striped linen headdress and carries a mace—a symbol of power—in his right hand. His name means “the one who belongs to the god Ra.” Ra, one of the earliest and most powerful Egyptian gods, was associated with the sun. The sculpture was probably buried in the King’s tomb to serve as the repository for Ny-user-ra’s ka, or life force.
[Gallery label text, 2009]
The Memorial Art Gallery’s bust of an Egyptian king of the Old Kingdom was unidentified until Bernard Bothmer, a prominent Egyptologist, realized that the Gallery’s sculpture matched the lower part of a statue in the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo. On the base of the Cairo portion, in front of the right foot, is a cartouche (see diagram) naming King Ny-user-ra, who ruled from 2390 to 2360 BCE. A plaster cast was made of this lower fragment and attached to the Gallery’s bust. The king wears a royal striped linen headdress and carries in his right hand a mace, a symbol of power. The red granite statue had been tossed into a refuse dump in ancient times at the Temple of Amon at Karnak, where this and other fragments were excavated in 1904. This is one of only two known portraits inscribed with Ny-user-ra’s name.

The sphinx, a mythical creature with a human head and a lion’s body, is found in many ancient cultures. In ancient Egypt, the sphinx, a version of the solar god Horus, represented the dawn and the early rising sun. Egyptians associated ruling pharaohs with Horus and his royal powers. Large stone sphinxes frequently guarded the tombs of pharaohs and high priests.

This warrior originally held a spear in his right hand and a shield on his left arm. The crested helmet enabled his fellow soldiers to distinguish him in the heat of battle and also increased his apparent height, making him psychologically more formidable.

Sculpture
This early Gothic console originally supported a vaulting rib in the sacristy of the small French church of St. Martin-de-Candes. The sculpture, which retains much of its original coloring, illustrates the story of Doubting Thomas, an episode described in the New Testament gospel book of John. The apostle Thomas refused to accept that Christ had appeared to his other followers after the Resurrection, saying “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” Christ appeared to them again one week later and told Thomas “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
The sculptor has utilized the architectural form of the console to depict this story. On the left, Thomas, his head now broken, places his finger in Christ’s wound; Mary Magdalen, to whom Christ also appeared after the Resurrection, stands behind him. The apostle on the other side of Christ is Saint Peter, who holds the key to heaven. The remaining figures are apostles who serve as witnesses to the miracle. The figure of Christ originally carried a cross-staff, symbolizing his victory over death.

Sculpture
In the Middle Ages, faithful Christians made pilgrimages to sacred sites in Europe and the Holy Land. One of the most important was to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, dedicated to the Apostle Saint James the Greater. Numerous altars dedicated to Saint James were located in churches along the route, allowing the travelers to pray daily for a successful journey. This statue was originally placed in a niche above such an altar.
Here, Saint James is dressed as a pilgrim, wearing a broad-brimmed, black hat with the image of a scallop shell, a traditional Christian symbol of pilgrimage. He holds the customary staff that supported the pilgrim, giving him strength to overcome the forces of evil and arrive safely at the cathedral. The figure carries a scrip, or alms sack, that is also decorated with the scallop shell. The scrip symbolizes that the pilgrim, trusting in the Lord, carried very little money.
The sculpture retains much of its original coloring; slight traces of gilding can be seen on the edge of the saint’s cloak and the knobs of his staff.

This gravestone depicts the classic Greek funerary image of the dexiosis, or handshake, between a husband and wife. This motif either refers to a final farewell or is symbolic of a couple reunited in death. Athenian workshops probably mass produced these gravestones, which were then transported to other areas and inscribed with the names of the deceased at the time of purchase. On this stele, the names Kleitomache and Eumachos appear above the heads of the figures.

In ancient Greece, gold wreaths were permanent and luxurious facsimiles of natural wreaths made of oak, myrtle and laurel leaves. Both gold and natural wreaths were an important aspect of ceremonial and religious life. They were often given as awards for victory in battle, public service, and excellence in athletics and the arts. Gold wreaths were also used as votive offerings to the gods and included in funerary rites as symbols of the deceased’s victories in life. Oak in particular was sacred to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, who spoke to his priests through the rustle of oak leaves.
Greek gold wreaths were made from a thinly hammered sheet of gold that was formed into a narrow tube over a core of pitch or resin. The tube was ornamented with leaves, also cut from gold sheet; these leaves were attached by stems that were either wrapped around or inserted into holes in the tube. Surface details were created with a variety of tools and punches.

The spiritual lives of Melanesian communities are dominated by Men’s Societies. The ceremonial Men’s House is the sacred dwelling place of the clan spirits, treasures, and of initiated men. Gable masks like this adorned the façades of Men’s Houses. Similar to gargoyles in medieval churches, these figures were meant to ward off troublesome spirits that can cause illness and spread mischief. Gable masks embodied powerful female, ancestral spirits.

This mask was made in the mid-20th century by an Iatmul artist after the traditional mai masks danced by young initiated men and boys. Mai masks were not worn directly over a dancer’s face, rather they were attached to a large basketry piece that fit over his head and upper body. To this piece were attached brightly colored flowers, feather and leaves that disguised the human form below. Hidden below the costume the dancer sang in falsetto through a bamboo tube which helped to further transform his voice and presence. Four masks were danced together in two pairs, one as a pair of brothers and one as a pair of sisters. While the performances were public affairs, much of the preparation before and activities during were veiled in secrecy.

Theories abound as to the meaning, symbolism, and function of these ancient bronze finials that represent the “Master of Animals,” one of the most important motifs in ancient Middle Eastern art. The central figure is a human male, his outstretched arms grasping the neck of long-snouted two-headed beasts with the beaks of eagles and round haunches with clawed feet. The figure may represent Gilgamesh, the superhuman hero of Mesopotamian mythology, or Sraosha, the early Iranian god of justice. What seems clear, though, is that this finial symbolizes humankind’s dominion over the predatory forces of nature.

Makonde people are producing more masks and types of masquerades now than ever before. This living, thriving tradition favors innovation, so styles of mask and dance change continually. Masked dancers perform before enthusiastic audiences for holidays or important occasions in the village.
This mask, from the 1950s or 60s is in the classic style favored by Makonde people today. The style and design of facial tattoos are unique to the Makonde and would have identified this face as belonging to a specific region or tribe. Most Makonde tattooing ended in the 1960s, so only the older generation wears the distinctive marks today. The specificity of the shaved hairline and the scar on the scalp near the left temple indicate that perhaps this mask was a portrait.

A krater is a large, wide-mouthed jar, often used for mixing wine and water. These two kraters [51.203, 51.204] were found on Cyprus, an important island in the trade routes of the ancient Mediterranean and location of a significant Mycenaean colony. They likely served a funerary function, holding wine at the funeral feast, or containing the cremated remains of the deceased.
The similar scenes on these two kraters represent the popular Mycenaean decorative motif of horse-drawn war chariots. The vase painter represented the two horses as a single body with two heads, two tails, and two pairs of forelegs and hind legs.
The scene may refer to honors for a fallen warrior as described by Homer in the Iliad, where, during the Trojan War, the Greek hero Achilles led a solemn chariot procession in tribute to his dead companion Patroclus.

Stonework
This fragment of a calligraphic architectural frieze is characteristic of North Indian Islamic monumental architecture during the later Sultanate period (1206-1526). The inscription on this fragment, “To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on earth. No one may intercede…” is from Surah (chapter) 2:255 of the Qur’an. This verse, called the “Throne Verse,” was frequently used for architectural inscriptions in mosque complexes and tombs. The entire inscription would have been carved in sandstone on high friezes around the interior walls.
"God. There is no deity but Him, the living, the eternal!
Drowsiness does not overtake Him, nor sleep. To Him belongs
what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. No one may
intercede with Him save by His permission. He knows what is
before them, and what is behind them, yet they comprehend
nothing of His knowledge, save as He wills. His throne
encompasses the heavens and the earth, and He does not weary
of preserving them. He is the sublime, the magnificent!”

Basketry
In earlier times, masks like this one were used in traditional initiation ceremonies in which young boys became men. Skulls of ancestors sometimes adorned the masks to reinforce their role as benevolent ancestral spirits. The dancer would have looked out of the eyes of the lower face and treated as handles the holes hidden below the small patches of grass.
As it was created in the 20th century, we know this body mask was made by artists specifically for sale. Even as social changes affect a culture, the traditional arts of a people can become representations of ethnic identity and potent symbols of familiar values and vaunted ideals of an earlier time. This mask was made by people living on the Sepik River, the major trade and communications artery of Papua New Guinea. Today, it is on the Sepik that most westerners experience Papua New Guinea as cruise lines travel up and down the river, stopping at villages where local artists sell their work.

Traditionally, spirit or gope boards were considered dwelling places for individual spirits. Each spirit was linked to specific parts of the land, river or sea associated with the clan. They were kept in each clan’s cubicle within the larger Men’s House along with other items such as human and animal skulls meant to honor various spirits within their clan.
The boards' highly stylized imagery is believed to represent the way the spirit looks. While the imagery reflects certain consistencies within clans, their varied style and appearance reflects individual artists’ representations of individual spirits. Despite differences, every board has a face and a navel. The navel was particularly important because it served as the access point through which the spirit entered the board.

The large Arabic script and the Arabic in the “cloud” shapes are verses from the poet Umar Ibn al-Farid’s Wine Ode, the most famous mystical poem on wine in Arabic. Ibn al-Farid (1181-1235), who studied Islamic mysticism and Arabic literature in Cairo and Mecca, composed poems that generally embrace a view of existence in which creation is lovingly intimate with its divine creator. This richly decorated leaf, made in the 1600s, reflects the continued popularity of al-Farid’s poem.

, Translated by Emil Homerin. Passage in larger lettering is verses 16-21 of Umar Ibn al-Farid's "al-Khamriyah" or "Wine Ode," the most famous mystical poem on wine in Arabic and Islam. The smaller letters at the right are verses 6-16 of Ibn al-Farid's "Al-Daliyah," "Ode Rhyming in D," a mystical poem. The red text is a Persian version of the poem.

The Tribute Bearer, shown wearing a typical Persian costume and ascending a staircase with his offering, was one of hundreds of brightly-painted stone relief sculptures on the palace walls and stairways of Persepolis, the spiritual center of the Achaemenid Empire. The figure represents one of 23 tribute-bearing delegations from all parts of the Empire that arrived at Persepolis for the annual spring New Year’s festival.

This marble coffin, or sarcophagus, once featured a matching marble lid. The central round frame holds a portrait of the deceased, likely a later personalization carved by the sculpture workshop at the time of purchase. Roman sarcophagi were not buried, but displayed with other markers and monuments along the main roads outside the city gates.

This man was a significant public figure in ancient Roman society. His toga—the traditional status garment symbolic of Roman citizenship—the scroll in his hand, and the box of scrolls at his feet mark his high status. He may have been one of the 300 Roman Senators who addressed important matters of civic law, religious practice, or foreign policy, all aspects of Roman life controlled by the Senate.

1000 BCE - 500 CE, Roman, sculpture, Tyche
Sculpture
Seleucus I, the founder of Antioch, commissioned the sculptor Eutychides to create a colossal bronze statue of Tyche, the Greek goddess of fortune. Tyche’s mural crown depicting city walls and towers identified her as the patron of Antioch and the bringer of its fortunes. Eutychides’ statue sat just inside the city walls, and became famous throughout the region due to the widespread distribution of copies like this sculpture in the collection of the Memorial Art Gallery.

During the annual hoeing contests of the Senufo, the farmer with the most agricultural prowess wins the champion-cultivator staff for one year. The voluptuous and regal figure, the epitome of Senufo beauty, is posted in the ground during competition to watch over and spur on the contestants. These contests are more than simple agricultural competitions; they weave a rich tapestry of art forms—drumming, singing, dancing, and sculpture—to turn back-breaking labor into an inspiring community ritual. The shiny area visible near the figure’s eye is likely residue from the ritual application of oil, a sacrificial offering made to the powers embodied in the staff.

This amulet was worn around the neck of a young Pende man beginning with his initiation into the men’s secret society and remaining as a part of his personal adornment for life. This face is a smaller version of the masks worn during initiation and would later act as a reminder to the wearer of the moral codes instilled in those formative ceremonies.

Masks like this one are danced by young Yaka men in celebration of completing a stage of their initiation into manhood. These masks provide protection to the young, vulnerable men as they enter into the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood. In particular, they are meant to insure the young men’s virility for the future of the community.

Many tablets were completely covered by a clay envelope onto which their text was recopied and sealed for security. This one records royal gurs (about a bushel) of grain (she). The she sign is a stylized picture of grain.
The tablet is dated: "month of the cutting of the grain, year when Ur-bi-lum (a nearby city) was destroyed." This was 2049 BCE, under King Shulgi.
