Painting
The watercolorist, lithographer, and painter Pieter Stortenbeker created some of the finest work of The Hague School, a movement of Dutch painters who worked around The Hague from about 1860–1900. They were interested in realistic rather than romantic imagery, and their subjects included Dutch scenes of daily life, landscapes, animals, and sea- and cityscapes. Early on, the work of The Hague School artists tended toward an overwhelming gray color, which explains why the movement is sometimes also called the “gray school.”
Stortenbeker was highly regarded during his lifetime. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, received the gold medal of honor at a major exhibition there in 1861, and was made a Knight of the Order of the Oak Crown in Brussels in 1863. His work is found in many museums and private collections, including those of the Dutch royal family.
