Painting
This painting portrays the Hindu deity Krishna as a philosopher-prince conversing about religious doctrines with other royals, who are shown on pedestals of descending size according to their rank. Other characters include sages and pilgrims who appear in regular order on a horizontally-oriented rectangular panel. The simplified linear treatment of the figures and the limited color palette of red, green, yellow and black relate this Hindu work to the painting tradition of the Jain religion, which comprised ascetic vows undertaken by both monks and laymen. These paintings feature hieratically-organized figures and text on palm-leaf surfaces that were then gathered into books.
