On this vase, Kataro Shirayamadani has painted chrysanthemums on a band of colors that suggests the sky at sunrise.
Shirayamadani, a Japanese porcelain painter, was hired by Rookwood Pottery because of its founder’s own deep interest in Japanese design. Rookwood played an important role in the growth and evolution of American art pottery (c. 1875 -1925), a period when hand-decorated ceramics production in the United States matured and achieved international recognition.
